If you have hard water, glasses can look spotted and cloudy even after cleaning. Sometimes changing the dishwasher detergent can help. The easiest solution to clearing up glasses that start to look cloudy is to add some vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher before you start a cycle. Simply add 1 cup of white vinegar and it will clear up your glasses very well.
You should see marked improvement after the first time you do this. If they are not crystal clear then simply repeat the process until all of the cloudiness is gone. In fact I recommend to using a little vinegar in each cycle to maintain the clarity of the glass.

Note: you can pre-test this by rubbing some vinegar on an individual glass with a cloth. If you cannot remove the cloudiness by soaking it and rubbing vinegar on it then it is possible that the glass is etched due to harsh or cheap dishwasher detergent and vinegar will not solve the problem.

I keep getting grit on my dishes, I have changed dishwashing agents, rinse agents, and done evrything I can think of to stop this. what else can I do?

Hi

White film deposits are observed if water is hard or when you are using more detergent than needed, try filling detergent cup half way. Try using white vinegar after the wash cycle is complete, run a complete cycle. Also turn down the heat on the hot water fed to the dishwasher. Try using water softener for better results.
You can also add vinegar in the final rinse cycle.
Hope this helps... Please post back if more information is required.

My whirlpool dishwasher is leaving a white hard film on glasses. what do I need to do to stop it

Try a rinse agent. You will have a reservoir in the door of your machine. Fill and see it that helps.
In some areas you have "hard water" which contains a lot of minerals. These can leave deposits on dishes that tend to bake on to surfaces as the dishes dry. In this case you add salt to your unit (again there is a reservoir to hold the salt).
In some cases a given detergent will react with glass, plastic, or ceramic depending again on mineral content and hard water. Changing your detergent can help.
Hope this helps, please rate if it helps get you with direction.

White film on dishes, glasses and silverware.

white film is actually from the calcium and magnesium found in hard water. your dishwasher is fine. its the water leaving the residue and spots. go to www.dishwasherfilter.com . they have a new product out exactly for this reason. very affordable and works amazing. you will love it.
