Hi,

You can connect at both computers at the same time if you just configured it properly.Your

Check your physical connection ie USB or ethernet cable. Much better if you use both ethernet connection or ethernet and wireless.

In most cases ..lets assume that your connectiions are OK. then you better check if you have dial up connections in either 1 of your ocmputer. Make sure you delete it such as AOL,earthlink or Juno dial up connection. Delete it and restart your connection. Dial up connection interferes wih your connection and router configurations.

Cheers

If running windows Microsoft has simple instructions on how you can share the connection either over wi-fi or another Ethernet cable to a second computer. The instructions for how to do so will be different depending on your version of windows. You can find it easily by searching in google, " Internet Connection Sharing ( Insert Windows Version Here )"
You will then be able to run both computers online at the same time.

I just want to use the router as a wireless switch

1. power router off
2.connect all computers you want to connect.
3. start computers one at a time completely
4. check router for status light per computer to see if device is seen by router.
5. open web page to see if each computer is online.
7. do ipconfig / release/renew if not connected.
then .....

1.Log into router
2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off)
3.Note router name you are connecting to.
4.. Check the laptop/desktop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses.
5. Set the laptop/desktop PC's up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address.
6.Note router name you are connecting to.
7. Move the laptop about 20ft away and try to log on to the internet.
This is for all routers to set up wirelessly. You can connect up to 250 wireless devices on one router. This will decrease bandwidth of course but this is the range.

Laptop ok desktop not responding

Are they both hardwired? Have you tried refreshing the router?
What kind of router is this? Is your ISP PPOE? If you an ISP such as Verizon, you have to clone the mac address to the router. The mac address will be the the pc that is okay when connected. I suggest powering down all and then bringing up desktop first then making sure it connects and go into your router and find the option to clone the mac address of your desktop.
Here is a great article on this:

I have had this issue with Verizon modems a few times.

Cannot connect other devices to my router

You reset it to open, no encryption and it still didn't work? HMMM. You are able to get your PS3 online? but can't connect your laptop and desktop? Are you hard wiring the desktop to the router? or are you trying to connect it wirelessly? If you are configuring your router with either the laptop or desktop, make sure the IP settings on your connection manager are set to the correct domain under Local Area Connection Properties, like 192.168.1.226, or something similar. Login to the router with your admin credentials. Make sure in your configuration (as instructed in your manual) that you have the router time set correctly so the lease time for your devices aren't expired. Apply settings. After exiting your router configuration screen, go back to your connections manager, either wireless connection, or ethernet adapter in your network connections folder, and under the General tab of the Local Area Connection Properties, change the properties of your TCP/IP client back to "Obtain an IP Address Automatically." Click "Close" and your computer should show "Connected."
