SOURCE: How do I install a DVD drive as well as my CD-RW?

mst...First, get your manual out. the drive must be set to be a secondary device unless it is not. You say you have only one IDE...did you remove the CDR? If you have a second IDE or other board connector, then this drive is primary on that. Now, did you install the drivers for the unit? You can use your CDR to do that or get them from the website of the manufacturer. Are there any bent pins on either the motherboard or the back of your drive? Somewhere in there is an answer.

If you have only one drive connector set, you can get a board which will allow you to setup additional drives. Ask your dealer.

There may be an easier solution. If you remember a time when it worked, do a system restore to that date. If that doesn't work, then try the following. Oddly enough, you don't need drivers for the CD/DVD drives--they aren't even recognized unless you have a non-microsoft burning program. Find out what burning software you have-- I recommend downloading Belarc Advisor, a free program which not only tells you everything in your computer, with model numbers for hardware and all of your software (with their unique codes), but will also inform you if you are missing any needed Windows updates. Once you know what you have, you have to seek a download or upgrade at the computer manufacturer's website, as it may be a special program not related to the burning software from the software manufacturer. That may do the trick--sounds to me as if your burning software is corrupted.

Serial ATA drives are pretty much plug and play. You just need to install them and set them up as a primary drive in your bios settings. The IDE devices can be connected on the same ribbon cable but need to have jumpers set on the back to determine which device is primary or slave. If the IDE devices are on different ribbon cables then most likely the hard drive jumper setting should be set to master or master (single drive). The CD-ROM drive jumper on master. BIOS should detect all drives You also need to assign the boot order in BIOS. CD-ROM should be the first boot device to load and install the new OS onto the primary hard drive.

I have an asus crw-5232A3 model cdrw drive. Im running winxp. The orange light on the cd drive stays on when a disc is inserted. No discs will read or write but windows says the device is working properly...

They do wear out and break, sounds like an older model. A new DVD/CD burner can be bought for about £15.
You could try a different ide cable from the motherboard, and that the cables are connected properly.
Give that a try before you look for a new one

ASUS P5S800-VM Motherboard set up

Hi m_k_bishop,
You must connect the CD-RW drive to the Secondary IDE connector on your board.
It can not be connected to the Primary IDE port.
(All SATA drives are seen as master drives in the bios).
With that in mind there shouldn't be any data cable connected to the Primary IDE slot.
When you first load the Bios menu screen you should see your CD-RW listed & you should see your SATA drive listed. Go to the title, " BOOT " in your bios.
(If your system has a floppy disk drive connected your Boot menu should read as follows);

First boot device [Floppy Disk]
Second boot device [Your CD-RW drive]
Third boot device [Your SATA drive as shown from the main menu]
No need for a fourth device.

Save the bios & exit. The system will auto restart.

(At boot up re-enter your bios).
Next change the [RAID Mode] to SATA or Enabled anything but RAID.
Once completed save & exit the bios. If everything is connected correctly & you made the changes above your system should see your SATA drive & windows should install.
(Load the windows CD into your CD-RW drive).
The Asus manual lacks the proper information needed for you to make the correct setting changes in the bios.

Good luck m_k_bishop!
Post back if still have trouble... You shouldn't!
Mike

I have a SATA M Hard drive and I would lke to add two ATA HDrives

As long as there is an empty IDE port you can. You will probably have to go into the bios settings after you hook the other drives up & set the boot menu to boot from the SATA drive 1st.

Pc died

Hello, I have had similar problems with that same motherboard in the past and have found that resetting the cmos (see users manual) or just taking the battery of the motherboard for a few minutes can solve this. CAUTION please remove the power lead on your tower before touching any components inside, and earth yourself first by touching metal.. as static discharge kills pc components..
Hope this helps.....
Tony.
