Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

My passport cannot be detected by any computer. the light blinks when I plug it,and does not function.

The quickest way to troubleshoot this, is by unplugging all other usb devices, not the kb or mouse. Then plug in the drive and see if the pc recognizes it.

It is possible that the computer was still accessing the drive when you unplugged it. Depending on what it was doing this could have corrupted files on the HDD.

Does your "device manager" see the drive at all... either as a drive or USB device?

My Western Digital Passport 80GB Hard Drive is no longer detected when I plug it in. The power light is on, the drive is running but it is not detected on either of my computers running Windows...


Any external disk-drive as small as 80GB is probably "out-of-warranty" -- it's likely that the disk-drive inside the enclosure has "died".

You have two options, not mutually exclusive:
* exercise the Western Digital "Customer Loyalty" program -- find the serial-number of your Passport, and access WD's web-site to buy a new Passport, citing the old serial-number to qualify for a significant discount on your purchase;
* open the enclosure, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and connect it to the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "frankenstein" it, creating a "new" external storage-device.

Hi There mosam,

In most cases, external Passport Drives come with their own drivers and install themselves automatically when connected to your puter's USB port. If it doesn't find a driver, then the Passport can't work. Go to the Western Digital Support website and type in the model # of your external drive. Having located the driver for that model, download it by saving it to your desktop. Then run the exe. driver install software. Once having done so, your Passport should show right up and off you go! Very Important...if the driver install program wants you to restart your puter after installing itself, be sure to do so. Good Luck!

I have a 120GB Western Digital Passport external hard drive and it will not open up on my pc. the WD passport will turn ''on'' and light up and the pc will detect that a usb is plugged in but it will not...


Sounds like your passport is not working anymore. The fact that it wont work on another computer is a solid sign that something has failed in the device itself. Its possible that both of your comptuers have USB 1.1 but I would think this is unlikely.

I would plug it in to one of the comptuers, then go into your administrator tools then open your computer management tool(start>control panel> administrator tools> computer management). This will allow you to see if windows is detecting the drive at all. Sometimes if the file directory is corrupt, or the hard drive is even partially damaged, then it will not show up under "my computer" but it might show up under your computer management tool. If you see it on there, then there is probably something wrong with the hard drive that is not allowing the computer to recognize the device, or at least install it properly. If you dont have any crucial data, you can just simply reformat the drive and it might start to work after that. If you do, then you might have to take the thing apart and transfer the data by using the hard drive like it was just another drive on the computer.

If your computer does not detect the drive at all, not even on comptuer management, then I suspect the drive, or at least the adapter part of it is not working, in which case, you will need to remove the drive from the casing and use it as if it was another internal drive, you might be able to reformat it, then put it back in its casing, and hope that it works after that, but I have never taken a WD passport apart before, so I would recommend doing a google search to see if anyone else has done this before.

FYI, when I bought my WD passport, I bought a replacement plan with staples beucase I knew that with all the traveling I did, I would eventually break it. I have dropped it about 3-4 times only after about 4 months, the thing still works without any problems, but that just goes to show how well WD builds their drives, however, I am sure that if I wasn't so lucky, that I would be calling them up right now asking for a new one.

Cannot find spark plug terminals.


It is a coil on plug system. The Red or Red/Striped wire is the control of the primary winding from the ECM. The BLK/ORG wire is the ground side of the primary winding. The BLK/BLU wire is the secondary winding wire.

ONLY USE DENSO SPARK PLUGS IN A 2000 PASSPORT. If you use aftermarket plugs, the crankshaft sensor tends to detect it as a signal to the computer, and for some reason it resets the computer. Seen it happen more than once.

13 ft/lb torque spec by the way.

I'm assuming your drive is connecting through a USB port? Does another computer see the drive if you plug it in? You may have to remove and reinstall your USB drivers through the Device Manager screen. Windows will automatically put them back in when you reboot (you don't have to do anything). Sometimes this clears up USB issues like you are having.

Did you try all of your USB ports?
