Dryer runs for three or four minutes then shuts of and willnot start for 10 minutes or longer'

Could be motor overheating and shutting off. Need to check if drum turns freely. If it does check vent hose making sure it isn't plugged causing dryer to overheat. If motor is bad it will get worse and just not start

Dryer heats and then shuts off

know that it can be very frustrating to have issues with your dryer. If you have to wait for it to cool down before it will start again, this is an indication of the motor overheating and shutting off on the motor thermal overload. This can be caused by the motor being covered in lint or a low voltage supply to the motor. Check and clean the motor of lint and see if it runs normally.

The high limit just shuts off the heating element, so that wouldn't determine if the dryer runs or not. normally if the dryer wont turn on after you have run it then will restart after it has been off for a while it usually means that the motor is overheating and what is happenning is the motor has a limit switch on it that shuts the motor off when it gets too hot. It is a resettable switch, so when the motor cools down it will restart. The only way that the motor overheats that much is either a bad motor or something causing enough drag on the motor to cause it to overheat but normally if something is causing drag on the motor, such as a bad roller, blower wheel ect., the belt ususally takes a dive too. All that to answer your original question about the high limit, most likely not.

Turns off after a few minutes

sounds like your motor is overheating or going bad. sometimes lint built up around the motor can cause it to overheat. or the motor is dying.

Dryer runs for about 20 minutes when good and hot then shuts off.

suspect motor overheating and shutting down on thermal..if dryer does not have good air flow through vent to outside lint can accumilate around motor causing overheat and motor failure try cleaning around motor but i suspect it's too late damage has probably already been done

Dryer stays on for 3 secs and turns off; sometimes won't turn on at all.

sometimes the movement will cause the door to open, thus shutting off the dryer. Does the door shut tight when you close it? there is a little clip that if broken, the door will pop open easily. After it shuts off is it easy to start again?
