I did not put any PW in this LT, One Sony tech says it was PW Protected from the factory, others say it was not. I have tried every PW I could think of, it seems to be 7 Chars

  • anves Nov 08, 2010

No, that did not work - I have tried every PW I could of used - In desktops I would remove the battery and that would reset it to default, I can not even find the battery

Unfortunately this laptop uses the restrictive style of BIOS password. Meaning if you can remove the cmos battery there is a good chance it will not forget the password.

Unfortunately the only way to truly clear it is to replace the whole motherboard which is a nightmare, especially with an older machine like this.

Are you sure there is no way you can get the BIOS password / remember it? I assume that is what is going on, correct?

Please let me know, just reply to my answer here...

Thanks
Tim

Well that Sony Support person that said it has a default password is mistaken, and if their was a default password they should have know what it was...

I can confirm there is definitely NO default password set on the BIOS of this laptop... someone somewhere must have set it..

Did you ever send it in for service, it's possible they did it then, it must have been some time it was out of your control so to speak..

There is one document that refers to entering the date after pressing F2, I can't imagine that it's referring to the password being the current date but try it I suppose... 1182010 if it wants a 7 digit code...

    Let me know!

There is a battery but you have to get to the area underneath the keyboard which is extremely difficult on this laptop. Also, removing the battery will not clear the password as it does on a desktop, it is designed in such a way that the password is not removable, they do this for ultimate security so that if you were to lose the laptop / have it stolen someone could never access the machine (if you ahve it requiring BIOS password to even boot, which it sounds like you have it set only to get into the BIOS).

I am so sorry about that :(

Hi. Bios password are encrypted passwords. You may try to remove the cmos battery of the motherboard and turn on the system without the battery. This will reset the motherboard. Again, this is not applicable for some motherboards. You may also use manufacturers backdoor password for the motherboard. Here's the link.

The only way to even have a hope of resetting the bios password would be to disassemble the laptop down to the motherboard and get to the CMOS battery that can be removed which will reset all the settings including the password.
Thank you,

You will need to disassemble the laptop and find the cmos battery remove that and that is the only way you will be able to install windows from an external device by changing the boot order.

For that open back cover of laptop then you cans see motherboard pull cmos cell from motherboard for 10 minutes then all settings goes to defaults. Then you can access bios. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks for using FixYa.

So, your basic problem is the BIOS password? To remove the BIOS password that you have forgotten, you must remove the bottom plates one by one and find the CMOS battery. Remove this battery for a minute or so and replace it in the seating after that. The BIOS password would have been removed.

Which password? BIOS or windows password? Windows password can be hacked by using a tool and BIOS pass can be removed by disconnecting the laptop from all power sources i.e, AC power, laptop battery and CMOS battery.

You can try to use system choice to boot to that cd drive. Since you can not get in to bios have you tried to reboot and once system shuts down keep on tapping key F12 and this should bring you option to choose where to boot from. Stop tapping once you see the boot options. Make sure as soon you choose cd rom option to press any key when it asks you to so, so it can boot and load from the cd rom. Hope this works.

Not sure have you tried this and depends on what kinda bios you have. Check this link.http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/CmosPwd. You might also have to go to cmos battery and pull it out for couple hours but this requires disassemble of your laptop. Also some laptops have jumper pins that are used to reset bios to factory but you would have to check your manual.

    have you tried thishttp://www.tech-faq.com/reset-bios-passw...

  • Mihajlo Jerkovic Nov 11, 2010

This is something i found. LAPTOP AND NOTEBOOK RECOVERY

Most laptop manufacturers have provided additional safeguards for their computers. We are not aware of any simple BIOS recovery program that works on laptops, nor are we aware of any simple backdoor passwords for these machines. BIOS passwords in most laptops are stored in a special chip on the motherboard and the only way to bypass this password is to replace this laptop security chip. Laptop BIOS passwords cannot be bypassed or reset by removing or shorting the CMOS battery. Further, doing this may cause other system errors and complicate the recovery or your system.

We offer a full-range of replacement laptop security chips. These chips will allow you to bypass the laptop BIOS password. Note that these chips will require soldering on the system board (a hot air soldering kit is also available.) Since these chips store the laptop BIOS passwords, replacing the laptop security chip will remove the BIOS password. However, if a hard disk lock password has been set, it will remain. Passwords can be recovered from the original chip removed from the system board using our Password Recovery Service (PRS) for an additional fee. Since the BIOS password and hard disk lock passwords are usually the same, recovering the BIOS password from the old chip may allow you to access the hard disk. However, this is not guaranteed, since these passwords can be set independently. All replacement chips include detailed instructions. Password Crackers, Inc. cannot take any responsibility for damage to system boards, computers or data. More information about our security chips and our chip password recovery service are available on our security chips page. I think you might have to fight with Sony on this one. Another link has some other suggestions but not sure will it work.http://www.ozzu.com/hardware/laptop-lock... Good luck.

i believe back door password goes by bios manufacturer and not by model of laptop, at least this is what i have found.

Hello sir, Hi, unless we find a replacement cd drive for your laptop. I don't see how this goes. you see, the laptop you have does not support boot from USB drives, (see setup on the bios first boot, hopefully theres a usb boot option, if not you may opt for a WINME install.) so its useless to use the internal CD rom drive.

Another option to try is to boot from a usb drive

instructions on how to do that are here

once you have booted to usb you should be able to access the cd rom

depending on what version of windows you are trying to install you will need to run different programs.

you could also install vista or windows 7 to usb drive and install it from that, it is much quicker than installing from cd/dvd you would need to be able to boot from usb to start with though

Good day,

You have to set the CD as the first boot device in the BIOS.
When you power on the laptop press delete repeatedly until you are in the BIOS.
You then have to browse trough the tabs until you find Boot Priority.
On the first Priority set the CD-ROM and on the second Priority set your hard drive.
Save the settings and exit.

The machine will reboot and will ask you to press any button to boot from disk.
Press any button to launch the installer and you are on your way to install Windows.

Good luck!

Yes you can use a usb external cd/dvd-rom to any operating system as long as the bios allows you to, most bios's have the capability.

When the external usb drive has been connected power up the mechine, in post it should tell what to press to enter your boot menu without entering your bios and choose usb drive to boot.

is your XP CD working

Do the following
1 go to BIOS and re-set to BOOT from CD ROM
2 use another copy of XP/Win98/Vista etc to verify if CR ROM is reading the CDs else...
if you doubt CD ROM drive has a problem....
3 use a USB external CD ROM, and to do that u need to re-set the BIOS to boot from USB CD ROM

Put the cd in and restart. If it doesn't give you a message to press "x" to boot from cd, then you need to chage the boot order in the BIOS.

To get into the BIOS, restart and press del or F2 (it might say something on the screen like press del to enter setup) that is the BIOS.

Change the boot order to CD first.

Install Windows XP without a CD drive

You'll need to assign the CD drive (which should show up as USB devicein BIOS or setup) as first boot device, if capable on your model/Computer. After you press power button, you should see a menu or dialog that shows something like 'press F2' or 'Delete' to enter setup. Once in setup, you should navigate thru until you find boot options or something of that nature. Select 'Boot from CD' or ' USB Device'. You should now insert your XP CD into the drive, close the tray, then choose 'Save'. It should now let you boot from the XP CD. At the first screen, you should select 'R' for repair console. It will then ask you to select an installation, type a '1' and then press the 'Enter' key. Next line will ask you to type an Administrator password. If you have one, type it, then press Enter. If no password, just tap the Enter key. Now, at the prompt, type CHKDSK C: /r as in (C: a space /r). then tap the Enter. It shoild now attempt to repair your Windows 2000 installation. When it finishes, reboot, go back into Setup and change first boot device to hard drive. Select Save and reboot LT. Have fun!
