New Samsung 1080p TV not displaying Full 1080 from PS3 Blu Ray movies

I have just purchased a PS3 80g and when I watch a Blu Ray movie it shows it in 16.9 and it has the bars on the top and bottom. I have a new Samsung ln52a650 series TV and a new 80gb PS3. I was under the impression that it would fill up the whole screen. there may be settings that would allow it to be displayed on the full screen that I haven't found. Help?

Hi hsaucier,

Although you have a wide-screen television, it is possible the video you are viewing was recorded in an even wider format. The bars should be smaller than if you were viewing the same DVD on a TV with a 4:3 aspect ratio, but will likely not disappear unless you view the DVD at a zoom setting. Many movies are shown in theaters at a wider ratio than 16:9, and the Blu-Ray disc has probably retained the entire picture rather than cropping it to fit your screen.

I recommend trying different viewing options that zoom in slightly. Be aware that this may cut off part of the picture from the left and right sides, but depending on your personal preference, you may not notice anything missing.

Thank you,

My toshiba tv 46inch 1080p says that it's on

Your TV can only present resolutions as good as the source you provide it. For instance a standard DVD likely provide 720 or less resolution while a good Blu-Ray will deliver 1080 content to you TV and show "1080" as it receives the data from the Blu-Ray player as the movie begins. You may see this number switch often even on 1 single DVD as the resolution often changes between movie trailers and the main content and menus can all have different qualities. So, your TV is only as good as the content you feed it. It can not make the content better then the original source you provide. Hope that helps

Blue ray wont play movies on new tv

Are you sure the tv is 1080p capable? Usually when "mode is not supported" is displayed, it means that the tv can not handle the signal format that is being input to it. If you are using HDMI, then signal formatting is usually handled automatically. If you are using component video, you will probably have to tell the PS3 to step down the signal to either 1080i or 720p.

Pink and green lines while watching a movie

if this is only happening on your dvd player, then change the type of cable used to link the tv with the dvd player, if that does not fix it then try another dvd player to make sure it's not the player itself

Games run on hdmi, but not Blu-ray movies

You most likely have the updated drivers. You may have to go and change a setting. I found an answer on the PS3 website that may be of some use to you. I hope this helps you: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&message.id=1662191 From the site: "go to bd/dvd setting and set the "108024hz" option off"
