Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

My External USB 500 GB Western Digital Hard Drive doesn't seem to work anymore. I have it plugged in to its power supply. When I plug it into my computer via USB, it powers itself on. But it never shows up in "My Computer" and my system doesn't give me any notifications or anything. Is it broken? Did I just lose 300 GB worth of files?

That might work... if the hard drive was visible to the OS.

  • Sporkinator Nov 08, 2010

I'm not sure how to do that, as the hard drive is normally plug-and-play and no software installation is needed.

Hi, Have you tried it on another PC? Try it on another PC and see if is picked up on that one. If it runs on another PC, then you may have a driver problem with your USB ports, so these may need to be reinstalled.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Jason

It seems to click a lot while it is running. That can't be good...

Mine also did the same, you need to run an antivirus scan through it and also defragment it. Also do a disc clean up. You will amazed as how many trash files you will have on it.

ok, have you tried to add the hard drive through the add hardware program in the control panel?
Try this and see if it works, if this still doesn't work then you have a internal fault with the external hard drive, or your usb cord maybe faulty.
I have also found that the scan-disk program on the external hard drives can get corrupted and if you take it to a PC technician they can get it to operate again

Is this a plug and play drive?

In most computers that are encountered, devices that are plugged into the USB ports are "plug & play" capable. There are numerous scenarios that can turn this function off inadvertantly such as a virus, data corruption or driver changes. In order to fix the issue and make an external device, such as a Western Digital Passport Elite hard drive "plug & play" capable, a user will have to make a few system changes. Click "Start" and "Run," then type gpedit.msc Click on "Administrative Templates," from the tree then click on the "System" folder. Double click on "Turn off Autoplay." Select the "Disabled" option and ensure it applies to all drives. Hope this helps,

My WD external hard drive has suddenly stopped being recognised by my computer

Unplug the power supply from the hard drive, leave for 15 seconds.

Plug power supply back in.

Try another USB cable if that does not work.

My Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB hard drive was working fine, until the power cord was removed accidentally. Now I can't get any computer to recognize the drive when I plug it in the USB...

Is the power light on, if not replace the power supply.
I f you have light then your hard drive is shot or the circuit inside the box is fried.
If it is out of warranty and you have another Western Digital Sata drive handy you can swap it with the one inside to see if the drive is bad.
Good luck.

I have lost Connection to the unit

I just bought a 320 GB version and I was not at all surprised when it did not work - Windows Explorer did not see it and no USB "gerdunk" noise ensued. Problem is that depending on the quality of the USB port that the USB cable is plugged into, it may or may not provide sufficient powere to the drive. The answer is simple: connect the drive using a Y-cable. This type of cable has two USB Type A male plugs on one end and a single male Mini-B connector on the other end. The two type A plugs need to be inserted into two USB sockets on your PC. One of them supplies 5V at up to 500 mA plus the USB signals; the other suppllies only 5V at up to 500 mA. That provides up to 1 Amp of current compared with up to 500 mA for just a single connection. I don't know why WD does not supply a Y-cable with the drive!!!! I've been aware of this problem for some USB sockets/some PCs/some drives for yonks. The Y cables are somewhat hard to get - here is one supplier in the States: www.pcconnection.com Anyone know of a supplier in Australia?

I recently purchased an external hard drive, and how do connect it to my computer.

External Hard Drive is mostly of the USB interfacing type. If urs one is the same, then it is just as simple as plugging in a pen drive in the USB port. If it has external power supplies then u can easily figure out how to connect. There are two parts in the power supply (if external power supply cable is provided), 3-pin main power supply connector and other is the adapter which goes to the external hard drive.plug in the other end of the adapter into the hard drive (there is a hole in it). connect the main power cable to the adapter extension. now for the usb Hard Drive, connect the USB cable to the USB port of the computer. Switch on the power supply to the Hard drive and u r ready to use ur brand new External Hard Drive. If it is a Firewire interfacing one then u may need to open the CPU box, and then connect the firewire connector on to the motherboard firewire port. It is easy to identify, it is a red colored port/connector.

External Hard Drive No Longer Recognized

hey im the same person who just posted above. i went to WD's website, and it said unplug the hard drive from the computer, and unplug it from the power source. then plug it into the power outlet, wait for it to spin up, then plug it in via USB/Firewire, whatever. it worked for me, so hopefully it will work for you.
