We are using the correct salt, and have ben using it for years. Checked all the things you said. The light is still on. Please advise.

  • jmarussich Nov 12, 2010

How many washings should it take for the light to turn off? The light is still on after at least 5-6 washings. Something does not seem right......

The salt light will remain on until the dishwasher completes the regeneration cycle of the water softener even if the salt reservoir is full.

If it is not turning off then it is possible the regeneration is not taking place. This is also visible from the white film on dishes, ie, the dishwasher is not getting enough soft water through it.

One problem could be the incorrect salt type is used or the salt dosage is not adequate for the water type.

I am assuming you have got the user manual for it, if not try this link. Check pages 15- 16 for the salt dosage and adjustments.

Please post a comment to confirm if the salt light goes off after you readjust the salt dosage. Otherwise it could be a problem with the softener system. Some solenoid is stuck and not flowing the water through.

as i mentioned before the salt light will remain lit until reactivation is complete. Looks like the softener is not circulating the water to start the reactivation See page 18 which mentions the light will remain on during the reactivation.

That is the reason why I am assuming the softener system is faulty. If any of the solenoids is faulty then it will not regenerate correctly and therefore leave the light on.

The test would be to let the dishwasher fill up and stop it. Take a sample of water and get it tested for lime content. The correctly regenerated water should have low lime content compared to normal tap water if you are in a hard water area.

The scum, film and white residue problems have started since the reduction of phosphates in dishwasher detergents.

Here is a tip that will help you to solve the problem of films, residue, and scum in your dishwasher.

We have hard water at our home, but the new dishwasher leaves a thick film on the glasses. We use the rinse agent, but it's awful.

You have to buy a cartridge type water softener and attach it to the
inlet water line of your dish washer. In addition to this there must be
a salt compartment in the dish washer.
Refer the user guide /owners manual and locate. Fill it with the special
dish washer salt. ( Do not use kitchen salt used for food).
The dish washer salt may help to certain extent in softening the wash
tub water inside. Check the switch settings for rinse aid and salt
release settings in the machine. Refer manual!

My Dishwasher leaves a white film on dishes.

check inlet water quality. If more calcium deposits in the water this could happen. Try using water water softeners.

If provision for dish washer salt check and add salt. ( not kitchen salt )

Finally check whether rinse aid compartment is filled with the liquid. If you are tablet, extra rinse aid not needed. Try all the above.

White film on dishes and still dirty.

Check rinse aid is actually dispensing - turn it up to max for a while to clear it, and check level is going down after a week.

If you suffer with hard water - your heating element may need replacing as it is probably furred up.

White film and food particles on dishes

Did you check the incoming water quality, regarding hardness!

If your washing machine supports salt addition technique, fill the appropriate box and fill the salt that is meant for washing machines. Salt works as a softener.

Finally check your rinse aid also for it's fill in the dispenser meant for it

Dishes are cloudy and covered with a film when done

Refill your SALT container with 1kg of dishwasher salt.
Salt reduces hardness in water -and increases cleaning efficiency. If you have a little furr build up in your kettle - you need salt in your dishwasher to work properly.

If you do use salt, it may be the salt reservoir is blocked with caked salt.

Wash the dishes by hand and view them again 1 hour later. If the dishes are still cloudy it's too late you have been running in hard water for years and etched the dishes. Salt only regenerates the Xeolite beads inside the DW. They collect minerals until they can no longer hold more, then the DW washes the minerals off the beads with the salt. Check if the DW is set correctly to the appropriate water hardness of your town. READ THE OWNERS MANUAL. PS> 1. You can't use regular salt. 2. Is the salt dry? Salt must be added into water so it creates solution (brine).

Miele dishwasher film and crust on the inside-

Hard water has this "crust" which are minerals floating around that ionically attach to everything. Some machines from Miele have a water softener inside the machine. Special dishwasher softener Salt is added that cleans minerals off Xeolite beads. When cleaned they attract mineral ions. If you don't use the salt then the beads fill up on minerals until they can't hold any more minerals. The salt is used in the regeneration cycle. It washes the mineral ions off the xeloite replacing them with salt ions. As new water enters the machine mineral ions slowly knock off the salt ions and attach themselves to the beads again. This whole process keeps the crust off the dishes and the walls of the machine.
Use a dishwasher cleaner that removes scale. And if you don't have a salt light on your Miele you can instead purchase soap tablets that contain water softener built in. Miele dishwasher tablets have it. You can order them online or call Miele.

Dish Washer not cleaning

white film generally shows that there is not enough salt in the dishwasher, this is not normal salt like on your meal, you buy this from the detergent section of the store, add salt through the part where it says "S" unscrew the cap and put about 2 cups of it in, while filling with salt water will overflow out of the same place, this is normal this will start to work after about a wash or so if the salt is fine then check the heater on the machine, make sure its warming up etc if i have helped please rate me
