I would say that your printer ink heads need to be alined, in the software that was provided with your printer, select align printer ink heads.

Thumbs up!!!

Thanks, I already tried that along with cleaning, testing, checking the ink levels, taking the ink cartridges out and returning them, opening up the back panel and cleaning the wheels, turning off the printer, unplugging the printer, turning off the computer (I have a Mac), leaving it alone for a couple of hours and trying again and crossing my fingers. I also get the flashing read lights for check paper and check print cartridges and an E. I looked up the trouble shooting in the manual and did everything it suggested there except call an HP expert. The funny thing is, I was printing just fine some scrapbook pages on photo paper. Then I went to print a family picture in another program and that is when I got the grinding noises and skewed picture with blurry images. The paper loaded perfectly but the final outcome is not what I want. It is doing the same thing in other programs so it isn't picky. My last resort is to try to find a new all in one. The reviews don't sound promising. I really want my HP 1210 to get well. Thanks for the help.

Why does the printer use one black cartridge and not the other? Is there some way of instructing it to use the left hand one too?

the pixma printers use the large black tank in most modes like text and standard (default) or fast photo printing .. thats most economical when you are using just plain paper .... it will switch to the small black tank only if you select "High" quality mode .. that black matches the nature of the color inks much better and results in really good color pictures if you are using Gloss or Matt high quality photo paper .. you can select the quality level by the following ... when you start to print, a window comes up where you can select which printer you want ... at the right of this window is "preferences" .. click that .. now select the type of paper and "High" quality mode .... now the printer will slow down but will provide really nice results and it will use the small tank black ink instead of the large tank ....the small tank is only used for "high" quality photo prints which is only needed for high quality photo paper .. if you havent tried that yet you might want to get some glossy photo paper (either Canons or Costco has great stuff if you want a lot, like 150 sheets) but most glossy paper will work except colors might need tweeking for some ... print a nice photo in the high quality mode and you should be really impressed .. and you will be using your small black ink tank .. you might want to make the first few pictures small (2x3 inch) untill you are sure everything is the way you want it .. i usually print in the top left corner first .. then reinsert the same paper and try again right next to that .. i do that until i get the colors perfect .. then i print big .. 5x7 or even 8x10 on a new sheet... the high quality mode can be selected for just plain paper and it will use the special black ink but it doesnt result in a better picture .. so no point in doing that unless you want to experiment .. if you never print high quality photos then you will never use the small tank black ink .. it will still be used up eventually because of normal head cleaning the machine does automatically .. ...
grey scaling does not select the special ink unless you select "High" for the quality setting .. then yes you can print using that small tank black ..again it will buy you a lot if you are using High quality photo paper ... almost nothing for plain paper but at least it will allow you to use that ink .. ..

How do I balance colour on the printer for photo printing?

Have the photo printer run a test/alignment page.
Make sure you are not running out of one color.
Anytime the image runs heavy on one color typically means another color is empty or low and not blending properly.

You can also check the settings to see if it is printing in Draft/Normal/Best Mode. Depends on the settings and application used to control this. Best uses more ink and of course provides the best image. Photo quality paper if you want the best looking pictures. Printing on standard bond will cause some bleeding and saturate the paper. (Looks feels wet) This will give the image a slight blurring dull look.
Depends on the quality of the paper used also.
Hope this helps!

I can't print photo's properly

If you are to go into the printer properties you should be able to adjust the print saturation for your pictures. I am not sure what type of printer you use from your post although if the information I have provided is not sufficient then please respond with the make and mode of your printer and if it came with any software.

Paper jams with photo paper only hp1610 all in one. will print photo on regular paper any size.machine also makes a "grinding rotating" noise

Hi there,

Paper can jam inside the printer for a number of reasons.
  • Open the cover to the printer and look inside to see if there are any pieces of paper or debris that may be blocking the print path.
  • Be sure to unplug the printer before touching anything internal to avoid electric shock. If there is something blocking the print path, remove it, close the printer, and try printing again.
  • You can also check inside the printer to see if any components have come loose.

Printing blurred

H'mmm - new one on me , and I'm ***** old. If it was all blurred I would blame a faulty capacitor on the main board putting noise on the line - but the first inch? Check the track (where the print head travels along) and make sure there is nothing to cause the paper to be a bit low at the left end. Report back on what you find.

Ink not dry and significant smudging

there r various modes in the printer in which u have to print .and that u have to select.as you said it is printing properly on ordinary paper.the printer is perfect.the photo paper have less soaking power that ordinary paper.as the photo paper can consume ink but not so quickly as ordinary paper.
u just change that printmode and then check out how it prints.
for example the modes r ----------best mode printing.
better mode printing.
fine mode printing
normal mode printing.
draft mode printing
economy mode printing.
now i f u print in best mode it will consume lots of ink but will take lots of time to print.
if u select normal mode it will consume less ink and print quickly.

u can change the settings in printer properties.
thanks

Printing crooked, blurred, bad roller?

Sounds like when you pulled out the paper jam, you misaligned the print carriage. That would produce both the noises you hear and the print quality issues. HP.com has a few web pages on their site that might help. The first one deals with noisy print carriages. Unfortunately, it's not dedicated to just your product, but the steps should generally apply:

Resolving Noisy Print Carriage Issues

There's a separate web page available for troubleshooting crooked or skewed printouts:

Printed Text or images are Crooked or Skewed

If all else fails, unplug the power cord from the printer, wait 20 seconds or so, then plug it back in. That should restart the printer and make it go into a self test which may include a realignment procedure. Watch for any error messages on the display on the printer's control panel. Sometimes to realign, it prints out two test pages and instructs you to place the first printout on the scanner bed and then press Enter.

Go to the following web page and when it opens, scroll down to the section "Replacing the print cartridges", and find step 9 in that section for alignment instructions.

Replacing Print Cartridges

Good luck.

My printer, makes a grinding noise, when the paper is feeding through when printinig?

Look to make sure that there isn't a small bit of paper caught in the wheels that push the paper through. Over time, even a small bit in the corner can destroy your printer.
