Small disk drive will not recognize any disks whether with data or without. the device manager on my computer says device is working properly. i did install a new drive.

Hey, right click on my computer or computer, select manage, on left click on disk management.

Take a look there and make sure each drive has a drive letter assinged to them.

Get another lead
Some external storage devices work poorly or not at all when connected to a hub; try connecting the drive directly to a port on the computer. Also check if it's detected in "Disk Management". Here you can verify if the partition and format are correct for the Operating System. Check the Drive's status in Device manager. This will verify if the external drive has a drive letter designation. Check Partition and Format. Log in as Administrator account in windows or any other account with administrative privileges Insert your removable disk into the USB port. Click Start, right click on computer and select manage. Now, click Disk Management. Check whether drive letter for the device is present. Check the lower window to find whether the device is detected (such as Disk 1, Disk 2, etc). If the device is detected with a drive letter, verify that no other device is using that drive letter. If it is, change it to unused drive letter. Hope this helps.

USB hard drive is a portable external storage device that works just like a conventional hard drive. The device is simply plugged into a USB port on your computer as you would connect a flash drive. Unlike a flash drive, however, a USB hard drive can store a much larger amount of data. If your computer will not recognize your USB hard drive, you can try troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem.

Plug one end of the USB cable into the port on your hard drive and plug the other end into the USB port of your computer. Ensure that both ends of the cable are connected securely. Open "My Computer" (Windows XP) or "Computer" (Windows Vista/7). The USB device should be listed as "removable disk" once it is plugged into the computer. If it is not listed among the available drives on your computer, proceed to the next step. Ensure that the data cable is working properly. Try another USB cable if you have one available. Disconnect all other USB devices from the computer as they may interfere with the operating system detecting the external hard drive. Reboot the computer if the USB hard drive is still not recognized. Plug the USB cable into another USB port and check to see if the device is detected. If you are using a USB hub, remove the device and plug the external hard drive directly into a USB port. Hello, I bought a 250 wd and it is not recognized on my powerbook g4. I have a USB 2.0 cable. Can you help? Also, it does not show up on desktop or on Disk utility.

If the SATA-to-USB converter is working properly, then Disk Management should show the device, assuming that the disk-drive itself is working properly.

MY WD can't recognize by my pc but last week i use it but there no problem but when i plug it again today in my pc the book are not be read and theres no icon that can be seen in the HARD DISK DRIVERS BUT...


Device Manager only says that the disk is getting AC power, and that the "data" cable is connected, and that Windows has recognized the specific device-information (that it is a disk-drive, and that the capacity of the disk-drive has been recognized).
Device Manager does not say that the "spinning" part of the disk-drive is still spinning, nor that there are any I/O errors (trying writing with a pen onto greased paper -- not everything you write can be read).

Try connecting the MyBook to a different USB port on your computer.

If it still is not "readable", then you have a few options:

* if the warranty still is valid, exercise the warranty, to get it repaired/replaced,
* disassemble the case, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed
* buy a replacement disk-drive, connect it to that USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and close the case, to create a "new" external disk-drive.

Check Following Instructions:
1. Check your USB cable properly connected to the computer.
2. Go to My computer - right click on property - Hardware - Devices Manager - in below - USB Mass storage device - right click on this - and Uninstall - then again right click - click on Scan - it should be reload your USB drivers

If the laptop is also XP, the drive should be recognized without problems. Sometimes this may not happen if the disk is unusually partitioned (could happen if you manually dual-booted it with Linux, for example). Verify the enclosure is working properly and has enough power supplied to, and that it appears in Device Manager. If all this applies, the enclosure must be considered working and the problem might be in the partitioning or disk access.

In XP Pro, do Start > Run Command > DISKMGMT.MSC and press OK. See whether the disk appears (if it doesn't, it's the enclosure, or its drivers - or the disk was dying and is now dead, but that's not very likely), select the NTFS or FAT32 partition - ignore any others - right click and mount the unit as drive, say, G.

If it doesn't work but the partition is found, you may need a more powerful tool such as Paragon Partition Manager.

I reformatted my C: drive and ever since Windows will not recognize my Seagate External Free Agent hard drive. It shows up under ?My Computer? as Removable Disk (I: )? It used to be listed as Seagate...


Try connecting it to another computer. If you can see your data then back it up etc.
After you have recovered your data connect it to your computer, from Disk Manager, remove the partition, recreate it again and then format the drive, hopefully your external drive will be operational again.
There is a possibility that the hard disk has died and you will have lost your data. If you are desparate, hard drive data recovery companies charge an arm and a leg to recover data from dead drives.
