Question about Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model

1 Answer

My engine was working fine for about an hour, then started sputtering and finally quit. I re-started and it ran for about 10 min and the same thing happened. I tried again today and the same thing happened after about 5 min. It runs better with the choke on, but it finally quits. Could it be the fuel filter? I am going to buy a new one later today

Check filter of course but also you might think of doing a carb cleaning also.Sounds like you might have something floating around in the carb, maybe even a little water in your fuel.If its running better in choke mode it's starving for fuel have carb checked and cleaned. Good luck

Will start and drive fo 10 miles quits starts up again drives for 4 or 5miles quits is this the fuel pump

Sounds more like a electrical issue, perhaps a bad computer. I had one case where the oil sending unit had a broken wire inside the insulation. When the car was cold it ran fine, once it heated up it would spit, sputter and quit. The problem was intermittent and totally unpredictable as to when it would do it next. I finally tracked down the problem, and subsequently learned (even though the service manual made no mention of this) that the computer will shut down the engine if it detects a low/no oil pressure reading from the sensor, which is what was happening, since the computer would get a zero reading when the wire separated. It may be wroth looking into, you may have a similar issue. Rare, but did happen!

I have a 1996 Honda Accord with 268k miles that sputters at the same timethe speedometer needle fluctuates wildly. But I do have a new Vehicle Speed Sensor. This typically only happens when the engin

I am no Honda expert, but a similar problem happened to my ex sister in-laws Ford Taurus. The speed odometer would jump around and it had trouble shifting (automatic transmission). After driving it I changed out the speed odometer sensor on the transmission and it's been fine ever since. I changed out the sensor because if the cars computer cannot tell how fast the car is traveling then fail safes in place go into effect and the computer will do it's best to keep the cars rpm's down based on the speed indicator and not let it shift or shift properly either. If it's getting false speeds then it will shut down the motor when the speed gets to high and allow it to run as the speeds fall (jumping speed odometer needle). It effects the transmission shift points also. It will either shift erratically or not shift out of say 2nd gear, so that the cars engine can't get damaged based on what signal the speed sensor is sending the computer.

My john deere push mower starts fine mows for 10 min quits wont start so I took the the gas cap off looked at it put it back on push the prime bulb 1 time it started ran for 10 min quit did the gas cap...

I'm not sure of the model number of your mower or engine to know the fuel and carburetor set up. I do have one easy thing to try though as it sounds as if a vacume is building up in the tank. Try putting a half of tank of gas in it, leave the gas cap off, and see if it continues as it was or if it runs ok. If this stops the issue your cap vent is pluged up. I hope this helps

It sounds like a fuel pump getting weak and hot. First check the ground wire at the fuel pump pigtail. and replace the fuel fiter.

88 Toyota Corolla backfires through carburetor.

If that is carbureted, and has a mechanical fuel pump, try running a length of fuel line from inlet side of pump to a gas can that has fresh, clean fuel, and if it runs good that way, you know problem is most likely in the tank. Removing the tank & cleaning it out is best solution from there. I'd even be tempted to add a small bottle or 2 of Lucas Fuel Sytem Cleaner to first fill in clean tank, just to help clean lines as well as carb.
