Question about Acer AL1912B 19" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Acer AL1912 will turn on at start-up or coming out of sleep -- most of the time. It does show the Acer logo for a short while then goes black. None of the control buttons respond. The green light blinks.\r\n About 10 percent of the time it shows a white/gray screen with bands of black and colors (sort of like a test pattern) and eventually reverts either to black or (about 5 percent of time) actually comes on. I've disabled sleep mode both for monitor and HD. Have same problem at cold start-up. Sometimes, disconnecting and waiting (allowing to cool??) will result in it's starting -- sometimes normally sometimes with banding. XP with an Intel chip ATI Raethon

Thanks for your response. I'm responding with the monitor ON right now. It seems to work fine as long as it isn't turned off or, I found, adjusted -- as in resolution. Anything that makes the screen go black stays black or exhibits the behavior I described previously.

Does this gibe with your hypothesis?

Also where do I buy capacitors?

This absolutely sounds like the powersupply on the lcd screen is faulty, very common its the electrolyte capacitors that cost around 1 dollar each, and you can replace these yourself, with same value and voltage capacitors.

Another possible cause is the capacitors on the mainboard of the display, but it sounds like the mainboard is OK since you get it to start up sometimes, it seems like its not geting proper power from the powersupply.

Here is a picture of two GOOD capacitors

On a bad cap the surface, top, will not be flat, it might bulge even just a little bit and its difficult to notice.

You will probably get best and lasting results by replacing all the bigger capacitors but not the huge one.

To just fix the problem, you need to replace the faulty caps.

That should be it.

How to take apart an lcd display?

Unscrew all screws in the display, check under all labels and soft objects, remove the stand and check for additional screws.

Once you have confirmed that all screws are out, the casing is held in place with plastic clips that you can release with either your fingernails or a plastic stick or a flat screw driver on the edges openings of the casing, on the sides of the display. you need to go around the whole display until it comes apart, after that its pretty simple.

let me know if you have any questions.

Well yes, the screen has to turn off for a moment and start up with another resolution.

It is most likely the powersupply thats the problem ,or then the mainboard of the display has issues.

The mainboards components and mainly too small to replace at home, and its far more complex than the powersupply board.

You would need a soldering iron and solder, solder remover or ******, etc and know how to soder.

Caps you can buy for example on ebay, or on electronic parts resellers.

The sensored word was Soder_sucker or Metal_Solder_Su_cker_.

which can be purchased either on ebay as well or check

Acer is going straight to a black screen after the acer logo in just shows a tiny blinking line. It goes no farther. I need help fast

Apparently your Acer cannot find the operating system. As soon as the Acer logo comes up, there should appear in one of the bottom corners "F" & a number should appear. Immediately start pressing that F number (top row of keyboard). This should take you to a boot screen. Scroll down to boot sequence. Hit enter. Make sure boot-up sequence is CD or floppy drive first, second should be HDD, then escape. Restart computer. Should then boot off CD drive. I am assuming you have an operating system (XP, windows, etc.). Let me know if this doesn't work.

I boot up the PC, the acer sl1912 comes on then goes into sleep mode in a few seconds

You can perform a test by plugging it into another PC/laptop to see if you can get the display. If it doesn't work there, you most likely need to replace/repair your screen. If it does, then it means that there is a problem with your PC's video card.

Monitor comes displays Acer logo and goes black after 3 seconds, with indicator light still green.

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed ACER monitors to get some ideas what to look for:

Acer AL1912 19" LCD Monitor goes black after power up

With the screen connected to the pc (which is running and putting out a signal) hold a bright light to the front of the lcd - a led flashlight works well. Do you see an image? If so then circuitry driving the inverter backlights may be at fault. I had this happen with a Dell Flat Screen, and found one of a pair of transistors which drives the backlight had developed a short.

Acer al1912 19" black

See if the problem happends in safe mode ( while booting hit F8 and aboot menu wil come up) if everything works fine then your issue will be the driver or a resulition that the display does not support or a refresh rate. Frist try to change the Res to a lower one and common (1024X768 or 800X600) also change the refresh to somewhere 70 to 75 and reboot if this dosent fix the problem try updating your video driver in safe mode
