Question about Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Calculator

Ad

The newer version of the TI84Plus OS, version 2.53 MP has added quite a few features that ease the use of fractions (proper, improper and mixed.) Of course you do not have keys for that but menus. Fractions are displayed as they would appear on a textbook (multistoried), and you can select the preferred display mode (improper d/c or mixed a b/c.

If you miss the old way of doing things, you can configure the calculator to use 'classic mode'.

You can find the free upgrade on educations.ti.com>downlods>

Nad here is the link.

Hi,

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

goodluck!

Set the Input Output Display mode to MathIO. In thsi mode answers are given in fraction-radical forms whenever possible. To toggle between Fraction/radical and decimal, press the S<=>D key.

To access the above screen press [SHIFT][MODE](SetUp).

To access the above screen press [SHIFT][MODE](SetUp).

Use the fraction conversion features of the calculator.

Near (above) the [S<>D] key that toggles display between fraction/radicals and decimals, there is a marking that reads [a b/c <=>d/c]. Accessed through the [SHIFT] key, this key converts from improper fractions [a b/c] to improper fractions [d/c].

Enter your fraction with the fraction key (the one below the CALC key) and press enter. If the numerator is less then the denominator (proper fraction) the remainder is just the numerator. If the numerator is greater than the denominator the display will show an improper fraction (d/c) or a mixed number [a b/c]. Here a is the integer part and b/c is the fraction part.

So, if you have [a b/c] type display the remainder is b.

If the result is displayed as an improper fraction, use [SHIFT][S<>D] to convert the improper fraction (d/c) to a b/c.

It depends on the version of the Operating system.

This works for Older and newer OS

Enter numerator, press the [division key], enter the denominator, press the [MATH] key and select [1:ToFrac] [ENTER]

With the newer OS versions 2.53 MP and following you can manipulate fraction more easily. If your calculator MODE is set to MathPrint, you can use the [Alpha][Function keys] to access some functionalities

This gives you access to the Tabs shown in the following screen capture.

Press 1:n/d for improper fractions or 2:Un/d for mixed numbers.

Press [ALPHA][Y=/F1] to activate the FRAC menu. You get a template for a stacked fraction, where you enter the numerator and denominator at their right places. Note that fractions are always reduced to their simplest forms.

The primary key to enter something that resembles a fraction is the division key, the one above the multiplication key.

However, any division you enter yields a decimal number, unless the result is an integer.

To keep the result of a division as a (reduced) fraction use the [|=>Frac] or [ToFrac] command. It is accessible by the following key sequence

[MATH][1:ToFrac].

Insert it after the fraction, before pressing the [ENTER] key to get the result.

By pressing [MATH][2:ToDec] you convert a fraction in to a decimal number.

There is no button, otherwise you would have discovered it. However you
can use a command called [|=>Frac] or [ToFrac]. It is accessible
through the key sequence [MATH][1:ToFrac]

To use it , you enter the numerator and denominator of your fraction, and before pressing [ENTER] , press [Math][1:ToFrac]. Thus by pressing the key sequence, you force the result to be displayed as a reduced fraction.

This calculator, although very sophisticated, is rather unfit for heavy fraction calculations. There is no dedicated fraction key, but you can use the [MATH] menu to access a ToFraction command: symbolized by a fat arrow and Frac.

I am enclosing a few screen captures to help you figure out how to use your calculator to manipulate fractions. To get the first screen you press the [MATH] key (below the [ALPHA] key. The ToFraction command is the first one in the list. The second item allows you to convert a fraction to a decimal number.

In the following screen I show you how to enter a fraction (division key) and keep it in fraction form, albeit reduced. Fractions are reduced to their simplest terms

In the last screen, I show you how to convert a fraction to a decimal number by making use of the ToDecimal command (last command line on the left, result is one line down and to the right.)

A fraction is in fact a ratio of two number: a division of a numerator by a denominator. The key used for the division operation is the one above the multiplication sign and below the caret [^], and in thee rightmost column of keys.

Beware that this calculator converts any ratio of two numbers into a decimal value. To keep a fraction in a fraction form you must use the [|=>Frac] or [ToFrac] command. To convert a decimal result to a fraction, use the [|=>Dec] command.

These commands are accessible through the CATALOG or more easily by pressing [MATH] (under the ALPHA key) and selecting [1:|=>Frac], or [2:|=>Dec]

Ex: to keep 27/48 in fraction form you enter

27 [/] 48 [MATH][1:|=>Frac] [ENTER]. Result is 9/16

You will notice that the resulting fraction is reduced to its simplest form.

To convert the above result from fraction to decimal press [MATH][2:|=>Dec]

A fraction can always be approximated by a decimal value but the converse is not always possible.

Hi,

Look for a key labeled**[a b/c] **

To use it to enter mixed numbers

1 and 3/7** 1[a b/c] 3 [a b/c] 7 [=]** displays **1u3u7.**

In conjunction with this key, you have the function [ d/c] accessed py pressing**[2nd]d/c]**. If you want a mixed number displayed as an improper fraction press [2nd][d/c].

To toggle between fractions and decimal numbers use the [F<=>D] key.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for using FixYa

Hello,

You get access the command by pressing [MATH][1: |->Frac].

If you want enter a fraction and keep it as a fraction (albeit a reduced one)

key in the number then the sequence [MATH][1: |->Frac]., then [ENTER].

Practice : 27/48 [MATH][1: |->Frac] [=] gives the reduced form 9/16.

While this fraction is still in [ANS] memory, you can press [MATH][2: |->Dec] [=] to get the decimal value 0.5625

Hope it helps.

Hello,

There is no key per se but a command accessible as follows

[MATH][1:->Frac] the fractions given are always reduced/

27/48 [MATH][1:->Frac][ENTER] gives 9/16

0.25 [MATH][1:->Frac] [ENTER] gives 1/4

Hope it helps
