i dont hav any software i was just given the laptop with the plug charger thing. when i turn it on it either says 1790 disk 0 error or it says non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. can i get it to work?
i received a compaq laptop that was displaying the error message NTDLR missing, some bright spark tried to load windows xp on and deleted the partition now the error message reads NON SYSYTEM DISK OR DISK ERROR REPLACE AND STRIKE ANY KEY WHEN READY. Can this be fixed and please tell me how.

hi i have tried all that you recommend but nothing much happens... it now gives me the error message saying PROBLEM LOADING SYSTEM DISK.i am not a pc technician but would appreciate all the help...
Provided that the hard drive is good, you should be able to boot with a windows xp cd, delete all partitions, reformat the partition and install windows on it. However if your hard drive is bad (which could be why you received the ntldr message to begin with) then you would need to replace it. But it wouldn't hurt to attempt reinstalling windows xp the way I described first.
