Question about Compaq Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I am the owner of a compaq presario pc SR5050NX. I want to add more memory. I believe that it has its original memory of 1024 MB. There are four slots with only two memory sticks. How much memory can this model hold. What would be the product number for new memory sticks...either 1 or2 MB, depending on what this modeall can hold. thanks,Susan

Yes you can replace/upgrade RAM yourself but before doing so take note of the following:

  • Remove power source from PC to protect from shock.
  • Use a proper screw driver which fits.
  • While you take the memory out, you can accidentally break nearby cable connectors and end up with an unusable system so its better to be careful or remove any cables in way before beginning.
  • Static electricity can damage the ICs so better use an anti static wrist strap or be careful and ground your self by touching a metal pipe an don't sit on carpet.
  • I am not liable for any damage. I only provide this information for the model SR5050NX. If its wrong then the info is probably wrong too.

I will now redirect you to some external web pages with authentic HP information. Remember to read them through. I do this only for your convenience so you may not have to sift through clutter.

You also need adobe reader installed to view some pdf files.

From the link below, note down the specs of this PC's RAM:

Some quick info.

Software and drivers

Some tips as a summary:

Memory module model:

  • Dual channel memory architecture
  • Four 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets
  • Supports PC2 3200 (400 MHz), PC 4200 (533 MHz) and PC2 5300 (667 MHz) DDR2 DIMMs non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
  • Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 4 GB*
    • 32 bit PCs cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.

NOTE: Important! You might find that your HP or Compaq computer is able to support a physical installation of 4 GB or more memory. However, this maximum memory might be further limited by the operating system not being able to address the full range of physical memory. 32-bit operating systems, such as 32-bit types of Windows 7, Vista, and XP, can address approximately 3.3 GB. This limitation is present on all 32-bit hardware and 32-bit operating systems and is not limited to HP and Compaq PC systems or Microsoft software operating systems.

CAUTION: Due to the amount of possible configurations, some motherboards might not be able to properly configure memory if the array of DIMMs contains a DIMM that is not from the same manufacturer, has a different CAS latency value, or has a density value (high and low used together). To make sure that the memory you install is compatible, make sure all DIMMs are the same model number and are from the same manufacturer and meet the basic memory requirements for your motherboard. If not, make sure that you can return the memory if it is not recognized by the system after you install the new memory.

You can find the motherboard specifications here. Here's what it says about memory:

  • Dual channel memory architecture
  • Four 240-pin DDR2 DIMM sockets
  • Supports PC2 3200 (400 MHz), PC 4200 (533 MHz) and PC2 5300 (667 MHz) DDR2 DIMMs
  • non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
  • Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 4 GB*
    • 32 bit PCs cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
You want to get the same type (DDR2), and the same speed (PC2-4200) as what's already in the computer. (You can use the higher-speed PC2-5300 memory, but don't go below the 4200.)

Suitable memory is available from many sources, not just HP/Compaq. Here's a typical part from Tiger Direct, one of the places I buy from. You might find memory locally is you're near a big-box retailer like Best Buy or have computer shops around. I'd suggest buying two more 1024MB (1 GB) modules. This would give your computer 3GB, which is plenty for typical users.

Hope this has helped. Thanks for using Fixya!

Help my pc is not detecting the correct amount of ram installed

Okay, first things first. IF the memory you installed is 1024 and you are using the on board video and it is 512 MB, you will only have 512 MB usable memory. This is because the on board video uses the installed memory to function. What ever the video memory is, subtract that form the total memory. If this is not the case, try re-seating the memory. If the numbers still do not add up then if there are four memory slots, make sure the memory is installed in the same color slots. Most desktops with 4 memory slots have two slots one color and the other two another color. Make sure both memory sticks are installed in the same color.

only thing that comes to mind is that board won't accept the larger memory configuration. did you check on that prior to buying and installing the memory sticks.
