Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other problems. Be sure that you have fresh fuel mix in the tank. Check the quality of the spark at the plug--it should be blue and snappy (plug gapped 0.020"). If weak looking, try a fresh plug first--if no help, remove the left engine case to expose the flywheel and ignition module. Turn the flywheel magnets just under the module poles, insert a thin business card into the pole gaps, loosen the module screws to allow the module poles to contact the magnets. Tighten the screws, and rotate the flywheel slightly to remove the card. Rotate the flywheel one full turn to make sure the gaps don't close up further. Reassemble and test for spark again. If ok, try for running the engine. Be sure the engine 4-strokes when running unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting by adjusting the H jet needle. Hope this helps!

Stihl fs 86

I am a Stihl mechanic. We tell all our customers that the proper starting procedure for a Stihl is as follows. Turn on the switch. Set the choke lever to full choke. Prime the primer bulb three times(if it has one) and pull the pull rope NO MORE THAN THREE TIMES with the choke on. If the unit has not tried to start after the third pull, open the choke lever and pull till it starts. Sthil carburetors are notorious for flooding after pulling the rope more than three times on choke.

Thanks;
George

How to start poulan 18 inch wildthing chainsaw

Hello Wade,
There should be starting instructions on back on saw, if not its usually the same for most saws. Fill tank with proper mixed fuel. Add bar and chain oil if necessary. Pull knob out to "start" position. Pull choke all the way out. Prime unit 6 times. Place saw firmly on floor, slide right foot under handle and have left hand firmly on top handle. Pull throttle and lock it in high. Pull rope 4 to 5 times until unit pops. Then, set chock lever on half.(this is usually pushing in half way). Pull rope again 4 to 5 times until unit starts, then after 30 seconds or so push choke knob in to turn choke off. If this procedure doesn't work, give it 10 minutes or so, because unit may be flooded, then try again. Good luck!

Starting procedure for stihl 012 av

Full choke, stop switch on run. Pull rope handle 3-4 times or more until it "tries to start" (it will not start, but it will try to for a split second) move the choke lever to the half-choke position and without pulling the throttle, poll the rope handle until the engine fires and runs for 4-5 seconds then fully open the choke to the run position, let it warm up for 25-30 seconds (don't forget to let it cool down about 45-60 seconds before you turn it off!) and then proceed to use it.

How to start the stihl f580

If you ment: FS80, the proper way to start ALL Stihl products is as follows.

Set Ignition switch to: -
Set to full choke
press primer bulb if equipped
pull rope 3 times, if it fires up, remove choke and pull till it starts
if it does not fire by the third pull, turn off the choke and pull till it starts.
If you pull more than three times while the choke is on it will flood the engine. Good Luck.

I can't get it started and I"m following directions on side of machine.

Those direction are not accurate all the time, I usually prime mine 4-6 times. put mine on full choke with the trigger pressed and pull 1 time any more will usually flood it, If you have the choke that kicks off after you press the trigger, put the choke back on to half and pull the cord pressing the trigger, Then pull the cord until it starts without pressing the trigger. As before if you press and hold the trigger during the start it will flood these trimmers..This should start the trimmer. You may have to let the trimmer set for about 15 min if it was flooded.

Start at 1.5 CCW form lightly seated then tune for performance like this:
Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.

There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.

I think your starting procedure may be the cause of flooding. Flooded is the #1 cause of hard starts in 2-cycle engines. Read carefully the recommended start in your manual. most miss the second note. It should be similar to this (read 3, read it again):
Warm start in the manual says 1/2 choke BS. Close choke, (sets fast idle) open choke, pull rope.
Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
If you still have trouble reply as you did before. I will get back to you. HTH

Trimmers floods its self, will not stay running

It is unusual for a trimmer to flood itself. It is common to have a lean condition diagnosed as rich.
So lets start by seeing if its lean or rich. Get unit running and apply as much throttle as possible and keep unit running then slowly close the choke. If unit starts to run better as choke is closed then it is lean. If unit dies immediately and is hard to start again it may be flooded.
4 possible reasons for flooding...
1. piece of debris in inlet needle, needle lever adjusted too high
2. adjustment screwd turned too far out
3. exhaust screen clogged
4. low compression
If unit has a stuck inlet needle it will flood while engine is off and be very difficult to start- remove fuel source and/or turn adjustment screws all the way in and pull rope until unit starts ( 4 or 5 times)
clean the carb, screws should start at 1 and 1/2 turns out on the low and 1 turn out on the high.
clean the screen.
If the unit has low compression it is not worth repairing- the cost of repair will exceed the cost of replacement.

Stihl FS 55 will not start

After trying to start several times, remove the spark plug and see if it is "wet" If it is you are flooding it. Do not pull the rope more than 3 or 4 times with the choke closed, whether it "pops" or not open the choke half way after the 4th pull and make sure you have the throttle trigger squeezed to give it gas
