Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

My Duo-Therm RV roof-top a/c unit continues to come on and off when the system is turned off. No air blows, just the compressor runs for about a minute then shuts off. About 5 minutes later, it comes back on and does the same thing. Again, let me stress, the system is in the OFF mode.

Hi,

The liquid line solenoid valve is bad and is allowing just a bit of refrigerant through it after it shuts off and the compressor pumps down....this causes the pressure to rise a gain and then the compressor comes on to pump down again...
This will happen even if the system is in the off mode...

the valve will need to be replaced... that requires the system to be evacuated and then recharged...

If the Air comeing out is the same as the temp inside the RV make sure the compressor is running and not just the fans. It could be low on freon. If freon is ok then you would need to ck the wiring to the selector switch for a short. It would be obviouse because there will be melted wires. I am leaning toword low on freon since you have already been inside the wiring/control unit.

These are a closed system.(meaning that there is no fill valves for recharging) But a heating & cooling technician can solder them on and re-charge the system. Only problem there is to get an estimate up front, and compare it to buying a new roof unit which also comes with a new warranty, as well as keep in mind that the freon went somewhere, so there is an obvious leak that will need to be addressed as well. Most times it's wiser and cheaper in long run just to buy a new roof unit.
Are you sure that the compressor is kicking in? Did anyone remove cover on roof and check lines from compressor to see if any cooling is occurring?
These don't often leak, that's why I'm asking. Any idea how old the unit is?
Perhaps in fairly new, it's a warranty issue.

I just need to find a supplier for a replacement compressor for the duo therm unit on my RV. Any ideas?

Not sure you can buy a compressor separate, but you can try any RV dealer. My guess is that a complete upper unit (roof) is going to be the way to go, and in the long run cheaper. By the time you pay parts and labor, you can get an entire upper unit, with warranty, and 1 hr max. to install it.

Hi; You still have a loose connection somewhere. I have found just recently a problem with a customer with the same problem He had burnt wiring at the compressor terminals. Also check to see if the fan on top of R.V. is running when the inside fan is running they are connected together on the same motor up top. Also check for a dirty condensor coil this can cause the compressor to fail out on thermal overload...alpharome416

Duo therm ac problem

Same problem. I have a 2005 on a Rockwood Roo. Worked fine in October 2009. Not working June 2010. Problem is not a freon leak, compressor went bad. I banged the compressor gently with rubber mallet then with a hammer but that did not work. The fan runs, the compressor runs but gets hot. Also no indication of freon moving through system as everything gets warm from the compressor outward.
