I have a Maxtor 20GB Hard Disk which when connected to a computer the BIOS is able to read it but the problem is the HD only shows ZERO GB(its empty). Can this problem be fixed in order to make it show 20GB...

Computer sees the drive. That is important. I'm assuming this uses a standard IDE cable and the drive isn't physically damaged. Make sure it is the only drive connected and it is the Master. Try flipping the cable if you have checked that the connection has a snug fit. Put the connector that you had the hard drive originally on and place it on the motherboard and the connection that the motherboard had insert it in the hard drive.Or better yet try a new cable. IDE cables have a tendency to fail. You could also try some recovery software. Maxtor is now part of Seagate so you can try here:

If you absolutely have to get data off this drive and you are desperate, then you could try the freezer trick. Put a dry towel and hard drive in the freezer for an hour or 2. Take the hard drive out and wrap it with the cold dry towel. That is to try and minimize any condensation build up. Plug in the hard drive and see if it works. This could potentially kill the hard drive but I have recovered data using this method before. If this works for you do not depend on this drive anymore. Good luck.

My external HD will not read on my computer anymore. It spins and lights up as if loading, but does not connect.

Most likely the interface from the external case has failed. Take out the actual hard disk from the case and put it in a desktop - if the disk is still good it will appear in My Computer. If it's not there then the disk is dead, time for a new one.

My portable harddisk snt working anymore after it fell hard

Sounds like it's hooped. Only way to recover data is to try to take it to a data recovery lab.... which can be pricey.

I need system files for my iRiver H10 20GB MP3 player

hard drive is probably bad -- common problem. cheapest solution is tobuy as-is h10 from ebay with a working hard drive (perhaps it has atouchpad problem), open the unit up and replace the drive.

See this forum for info on how to open the player with a torx tool and a plastic pry unit. forum

Planb - sell unit on ebay in as-is condition and use money toward a topnotch 20gb refurb unit for about $30-50 from sellers like metromania

Cannot access the content inside the player

Unfortunately it sounds like the hard drive or flash drive in it has gone bad. You didn't specify if it was a hard drive or flash memory based player so I am assumong it is hard disk. A bad drive would cause that problem and unfortunately if the drive is bad the computer can't detect the drive in it and it is unaccessable. If it is still under warranty, send it in for repair or replacement before the warranty expires. If it is out of warranty, Phillips may have a reasonable repair charge, but in most cases I have seen, if the unit is out of warranty, manufacturers repair costs make it not really worth fixing and for a little more than the repair charge you can get a new player.
If you have a friend or relative that is a computer or electronics whiz they could probably replace the hard drive, if it is a hard drive based player, for a reasonable cost. A 1.8 or 2.5 notebook drive is usually less than 100 USD for an 80 GB.

Cheers

Can you charge it? If so fully charge it and then connect it to the computer and reset/rebot the ipod and see if that helps, if you can't charge it just do the same thing.

Ipod 20gb

Temperature is a huge factor in the battery life of an ipod. Excessive heat and cold can kill a battery almost instantly in some cases. A 20GB is a bit antique anyways and even if you fix the battery, the hard dive is sure to follow. Hard drives are only designed to last about five years and then then wear out. I would recommend an update but you can try fixing the battery.
