Question about Poulan 42-Inch Steel Deck 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C Engine With 6 Speed

1 Answer

I have a Poulan 733-864 14.5 Briggs motor. I cannot get it to start. Battery tested fine but there isn't enough oomph to turn the motor. The starter has a rusty nut and post where the cable attaches. Could this be the problem? Do I have to replace the starter?

I would start my car/vehicle and hook up a pair of jumper cables and jump the mower, more then likely the battery is out, Wal-mart sells them for around $30. Remember to hook the cables to the mower fist, making sure you will be able to sit on the seat without causing the cables to short out, then hook them to the vehicle, depending how far gone the battery is you may or may not need to start the vehicle. Good Luck Tim

Engine won't crank. battery charged up. alarm sounds go off,

The battery is charged up, but still remains suspect, because a failing battery cannot hold enough oomph to crank the motor, even after charging. So -

- failing battery, especially if 3 yrs old or more
- worn starter solenoid contacts
- failed starter solenoid coil
- dead spot in starter motor windings
- bad contact at either end of battery ground strap

There is a crude test. Turn on the headlights and try to crank the motor. If the lights dim down a lot, it is the battery at fault.

Sarter will not turn engine over

Two things cause this...a bad starter or weak battery...not sufficient Amps will not allow enough power to the starter to spin it fast enough to start the engine....a bad starter simply cannot use the power supplied it to turn the engine properly. Have some one do a load test on the battery..tests the battery simulating starting the engine. If ok it is the starter if not replace the battery..good luck.

Check the safety switches, especially the blade safety switch, people forget that one. Blades must be disengaged to start the engine.

Replace the battery. Even though the battery may say it's good, it doesn't have enough of cranking amps. Go purchase a battery with 350 cranking amps. This will fix your problem. The battery power isn't enough to kick the starter completely up to turn the engine.

Engine won't turn over

Is the engine flooding the cylinder with gas and hydro locking it? Try pulling the spark plug and seeing if the engine can be turned over and keep note if any gas comes out.

Have the battery tested at an auto parts store to ensure there is enough power in it. Sounds like it's strong enough to turn the motor with no compression (spark plug removed) but too weak to turn the motor with compression. Also check for loose or corroded wires.

Engine will not crank with every try.

Still sounds like a valve adjustment problem and as for relying on a Sears serviceman.....well. lol I just did a valve readjust on basically the same engine with identical symtoms and it starts fine now. As for the 10w-30, Briggs recommends 30w in the warmer climates.
