the NexStar is new and the drive is what came out of my macbook when the hard drive failed. Apple put in a new drive and told me it appeared to be spinning in the macbook and data may be able to be retrieved if I buy the external drive case. I can hear it spinning on start up and it appears to be spinning as it is making a slight humming sound. I have a green light on the enclosure. I just can not get it to be recognized on the macbook. USB cables are properly plugged in. thanks for any help

I was afraid of that. I did buy some recovery software but it sounds like it would work only if the hard drive is still installed on the computer or if it can be recognized on the external.

    thanks

what was the part about partitioning the hard drive that I read in the manual? If I did not do that correctly would that be any reason it would not show up? I went to Utilities and Partitions and created one but not sure if I understood the instructions.

  • tombyer1 Nov 07, 2010

nope, it did not show up there.

thank you, there is nothing I can not live without, just hoping.

Hello,

has this drive worked before or is this brand new and has never been used with a mac before?

if it has worked did it work on another machine, and do you know what file system it has.

    Hey

your apple tech has provided you with a bit of false information, if the hard drive has died, like it clearly has since it was replaced, it doesn't get replaced unless its faulty, the data is most likely lost.

A professional data recovery service might be able to get something out from the drive, in a lab when they take the drive apart and install the discs inside the drive to another working drive.

Or you might be able to recover something with a file recovery program but I'm not fimiliar with any mac file recovery software.

  • Ekse Nov 07, 2010

but definitely its not going to show up like a normal drive since its clearly faulty.

  • Ekse Nov 07, 2010

Take a look in the disk utility, does the drive show up there? if it doesn't show up there at all these programs will probably not work.

  • Ekse Nov 07, 2010

allright, if you need to get something out of that drive you better look up a data recovery service, the prices will be very high.

  • Ekse Nov 07, 2010

You don't need to create any new partitions on the drive, thats actually working agains you, if you want to recover something from the drive, you definitely don't want to go making changes to it by making new partitions etc, because it overwrites the data on the drive, as long as you don't overwrite anything it is possible to recover at a laboratory.

Cant delete or add new files to my NexStar.3, I have it connected to a MacBook Pro

If you can SEE the drive on your desktop but cannot modify it's contents there is a good chance it is formatted as NTFS which is a Microsoft Windows format. Mac's can only read/copy information from these drives and not write/delete/modify them. You have 2 choices, you can erase the drive and reformat it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) (Mac/Linux only) or you can format it as MS-DOS (FAT32) which is truly cross platform but slower to read and write to from a Mac. To reformat the drive you use Apple's "Disk Utility" program in your utility folder.

This is the usual reason:
USB port has 4 pins (connectors). The two at the ends supply 5 Volts to the hard drive (or any other appliance you connect. I don't think there's a problem with those two because you can see the power light on the hard drive.
The middle is for data transfer. If one gets damaged, although the device gets power, the OS cannot recognize the device.
Try changing the USB cable you are using. Connectors in the wire are damaged more easily than those in the device.

I just bought the 260U2, same deal. Take it back and demand a discount for one that works. Bring your hard drive and confirm it in the store.

Windows 7 NexStar drivers and installation needed

No device-drivers are needed. Just connect this USB device, and Windows will recognize it. If there is a "one-touch-backup" button, it won't work, but you can still use drag-and-drop to copy files from your internal disk-drive to this external disk-drive.

CPU won't read it im running xp

Ok, here's some step by step instructions.

First is the light on the nexstar coming on when you plug it in, if so what colour? If not try using both USB connectors on the PC end to plug in, it's possible you're not getting enough power if the light is not on as many 2.5" hdd enclosures require 2 USB connections one for power and data and the other for additional power.

Next, if the light is on but no drive in my computer, right-click on my computer, then left-click manage, select disk management from the MCC window that pops up. If your Nexstar HDD shows up here, identify it on the bottom part of the window and report back what is said there.

If it is not there and the light is on, try a different USB port. If the light is not on or you tried the other ports and still no luck the enclosure itself may have failed.

Try moving the HDD into a new enclosure and try again. If this works, Great, if not then the HDD may be damaged and may need a pro to get your files back. If that is the case report back here with your progress and region and I will recommend an appropriate pro.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
