Question about Clavia Nord Stage 88 - Digital Stage Piano NS88

1 Answer

Hi there, I have a Nord Stage EX 76 and played a gig on friday night outdoors. I have set the keyboard up and now one or two of the notes occasionally sound much louder than they should. The problem remains when I change sounds.

What has happened is that one of the contacts on those notes is not working properly. Each key has two contacts. One makes before the other as the key is pressed. The processor MEASURES the time between those as you hit the key to read the VELOCITY you have hit the key with. This velocity is often used for loudness on many voices such as the piano. These contacts are USUALLY conductive rubber pills suspended in silicone rubber "domes". One can disassemble the key area and clean BOTH the black rubber pills and the circuit traces they are pressed against using Q Tips and ONLY 99% isoprophyl alcohol to restore proper operation
One needs to be very careful when disassembling unit as there are many tender ribbon cables and connectors. Best to have clear work area and two people to "control" the halves of the shell while opening..

It sounds like the sustain is stuck on as if a sustain pedal is active. You don't mention if you have one, however if you MIGHT have one and you have used a Roland pedal, that brand is reverse sensed and would cause note to remain on.

I would check your fingering... You MAY be late in hitting a particular note and the using auto chord... this can cause the problem. Another thing is if notes are hit with different velocity that can affect the sound. Sometimes certain voices have VELOCITY switching which actually changes the voice depending on the velocity you hit a note.

The after touch sensitivity on the Nord Stage EX 88 seems to be very low and I need to press down very hard to make the sound that I want with it. Please help.

Here is a link to their support where you can download the latest operating system, manual etc.: Consider joining the forum. There are always helpful members who quite likely have experienced some of the same problems. You didn't mention if that happens when you play piano, organ or synth as the setting changes you make can affect each differently. Here is a link to the download page for Windows: Here is the one for Mac: Pages 61 and 62 of the manual are good starting places. Aftertouch can be assigned to different functions. You will need to read Morph Assign also on page 60. Page 33 explains Velocity Sensitivity which is different from Aftertouch. If the Aftertouch is not giving you enough control over a parameter, try using the Wheel or a pedal for that parameter instead. Here is a link to the manual: The Factory Reset function is on page 68.

Nord keys not making sound

This will have the weighted keys.

The contacts for the dead keys are dirty and have to be cleaned. This type keyboard is NOT DIY unless you are adept at electronics. The actual contacts are accessable after a lot of dis-assembly.
They are conductive rubber that is pressed against circuit traces on circuit board.

Use ONLY 99% isoprophyl alcohol and QTips to clean both the contact and the circuit traces they press against. Clean ALL the contacts when you have the unit open as others are sure to become inoperative as well.

Clavia Nord Stage EX88 dir. in active monitor damage the speakers (tweeter) ? Happened twice with active monitors: Peavey Impulse P1020 and Behringer B-300 Peter ;-)

It is VERY easy to send to high a level to speakers.

A few important things:

ALL interconnected equipment MUST be powered from a single point. This avoids ground loops that can set up feedback. Powering monitorss at one end of a room from a receptacle and the synth at the other end of the room is inviting trouble.

REMEMBER that audio sent to the speakers that is causing the damage MAY be well above one's hearing range!

Use BALANCED audio lines where possible. CHECK that in's and out's are compatible, for instance both BALANCED TRS.

Use PROPER cables for interconnecting. Using plain stereo TRS cables for interconnecting TRS balanced lines is a NO-NO... they are cheaper but invite trouble.

If in close proximity to radio transmitters, interference can be a problem due to rectification of the radio signals that can create frequencies beyond the hearing range that can damage speakers.

The starting point is a post mortem on a failed speaker to look for damage.

The Behringer definitely requires a TRS or XLR input. I searched for a user manual online for the Nord but was unable to find one to verify they have a balanced output to run to the monitors.

There is a possibility that a filter in the NORD is NOT working, allowing digitizing noise to be presented on the output audio causing overloading of the tweeter speakers. The best way to check that is with an oscilloscope if you have access to one.

I would turn down the high eq on any active speaker to reduce the signal to the tweeter as an interim step.

When I plug the sustain pedal in, it remains on sustain (regardless of whether I push the pedal or not, so it's not the polarity that's a problem)

Try testing your switch for function by testing it with a volt ohm meter to make sure the cord and switch are functional. In this case if it is the recommended foot switch it will be momentary on or off. That is if you are using your meter to test across the plug, when you press down you should have no resistance displayed if there was resistance when you connected the probes or resistance displayed if there was none when you originally connected the probes. If the switch is good, your problem is internal to the keyboard and you will have to troubleshoot the circuit on the board. Another possibility is the solder joint has failed where the sustain pedal jack is mounted or the jack itself has failed.
