Un-install the un-necessary programs from your computer, and also clean the startup items from the computer.
Upgradation of RAM will also increase the system speed and fresh installation of operating system will also do the same job.

When ever my computer shutsdown it goes to startup repair. sometimes it works itself out. but every morning i wake up to it with the startup repair screen on

Sartup repair is some thing that tries to fix the OS issues...
Normally its of no use.. Its better if you can reinstall the OS after getting windows and taking backup of all your important files..
It should be vista or win 7 that you have on the computer then tap F8 when the computer turns on and then you will be able to see the advanced boot options.. Select repair my computer.. In the repair my computer screen select the dell factory image restore...
Your computer will go through the installation and it will be up and running...

If you are not able to do this then try to reinstall the OS with the help of a OS CD..

I rolled back my laptop to a later date, when it was completed it restarted with a blank screen. how can i fix the problem?

I am assuming you are using Windows Vista:

Turn the laptop on and press F4 at sartup. Choose safe mode. Iff it does not allow you to boot in safe mode then choose, fix computer in advanced options. Do not do a factory install unless you absolutely have to as this will delete all files in computer. Windows Vista has implemented some really good startup tools and this should help you get your computer back.

Anytime you rollback and a security pack is rolled back, you get these problems with Vista. It has something to do with the Antivirus clashing with Vista.

Also, try starting the computer and then shutting down a couple of times in a row and then let it sit there for 30 minutes to see if it comes back on. Patience is the key here....Hope this helps!
