The device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, to "check warranty status" -- if it is still under warranty, you can get a replacement, at minimal cost to you.

The hard drive fell and i hearing it still spinning and stuff but it not being recognised on the computer

The hard drive is easily damaged when it takes a fall, there is no way it can be repaired because it is integrated into one unit, the only option is to replace the hardware.

hello, i would advice you to format your external hard drive by write clicking on it and click on format and click on start to begin, if this does not allow you to still put files on your external hard drive,then insert it on a friend laptop and see whether you can move files to it. Computer stopped being able to read external Maxtor hard drive. 640GB PN:9NZ2DG-500 SN:2HBADBDS. How do I retrieve data

Check the USB port and/or the cable, check if windows can detect your device. If windows can detect but can't read data perform a format or delete the partition and then use any file or partition recovery software you want to use. They will automatically rebuild partition table and MBR according to your need. If windows can't detect, unplug your device, uninstall the driver from the device manager, restart your pc, plug your device again and see windows will automatically install the device.

When i turn it on it has a disk read error occurred message

The Toshiba cannot find a boot disk, this problem could be caused by the BIOS could not detect the hard drive because has lost the configuration or the hard drive is faulty or the disk controller is faulty.
Check the BIOS configuration to see if it has detected the hard disk and some BIOS have a utility to test the hard disk, if this is available then run the hard disk test.
Another way to test the hard disk, remove the hard disk from the laptop and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port. If this computer see it as and external hard drive and you can open the folders and files the the hard drive is OK and the fault is most likely the laptop's motherboard.
If the computer cannot detect or open the files on the external USB adapter then the hard drive is faulty. The hard drive needs to be replaced in the Toshiba and Windows installed to get the laptop working again.
