Focus/zoom issue with Konica Minolta Dimage Z3 digital camera w/ 12x zoom

We have had this camera for a 3 or 4 years... the last trip I took it on was almost 2 years ago. It seems to be stuck zoomed in. I can focus on images but only from far away. I tried reseting the default settings and I've looked through the manual but it was really unhelpful. Please help before our camera is completly out dated.

THank you,

Was working fine on holiday. Very next day came to use it and focus seems to be locked on maximum zoom. Operating the zoom controls makes no difference but it does sound like something is trying to operate.

I have a similar, if not the same, problem - the focus is not responding to the auto setting and remains on 'telephoto' albeit blurred. I can focus using the tele control as if the automatic focussing has been turned off. Resetting with the 'Reset defaults' function has not solved the problem.

    Hi all,

Had the same problem and and a very firm tap helped.

I have the same problem. Thumped it hard a few times and it did not fix the problem. Does anyone have another idea?

This is a symptom commonly listed for DiMAGE cameras listed on EBay for 'parts only'. Dropping the camera I had caused the same problem and carefully 'smacking' the camera once again did solve the problem but that may have been dumb luck. Sorry but it is a service task that may cost more than the camera.

I have just read hokuwho's solution to the focussing problem with the Dimage Z3, and whoopee! - I gave the camera a solid bat with my hand on all sides, turned it on and - yes- the system is now focussing. Many thanks for your military problem solving ( minus the 2lb hammer!)
Now, how do you get blood out of the camera?

I had not used my camera for two years. Had the same focusing issues when I went to use it. After a miserable day of swearing I tried thumping the lens housing with the side of my hand and the focusing started working again !

Yep, agreed! just tap it on a table or similar and Hey-presto - all fine again. Have done this twice now, don't know how many times I'll get away with it but it's OK so far.

I slapped the side and the zoom started working again. Weird but works.

After reading this thread it seems to occur after a time of none usage.

I read the thumping/smacking solutions and tried both numerous times. My focus issue started over a year or so ago and I had given up and bought a Canon S5 IS. I love the Canon. I got the Z3 out again a few days ago and started the thump-smack again. I was dropping it on the carpet again etc. Not untill I got serious did it work for me. I simply threw the Z3 up in the air and let it hit the carpeted floor and that was enough. Presto and all that stuff. I did have to repeat this a few times with my Z3 turned off and turned on. The guy that threw his Z3 down the stairs inspired me.

Awesome. I was about to go buy a new Dimage z3 because it was zoomed all the way...

Surprisingly enough, most freezing problems (and other problems, too) can be solved by gently hitting your camera. It works! Just remember to be gentle.

The lens elements or aperature have become misaligned or stuck. You might try selecting various focus and digital/analog zoom mode settings.

Dimage Z3 blurred zoom images

I don't think there's any problem. Simply, a longer zoom means that - without a faster shutter speed - there is an increased probability for camera shake. Additionally, cameras usually struggle with focus in longer zoom. To be sure that there isn't a fault, do this:

1) Place the camera on a tripod or other sturdy surface
2) For additional stability (and to avoid camera shake due to shutter button movement), select the self-timer
3) Focus and take the shot.
If it's still blurry, then yeah, there's a problem
