The drive shaft moves and causes my pulley to rub on the drive shaft housing on my 42" Simplicity MFG 1691522 snowthrower

if it's a simplicity then chances are good you have worn out the bearing shimms inside motor housing and it's allowing the shaft to move more , if you want to save it you'll need to open up motor housing and pull pullys off shaft and add new schimms ,bearings too would not hurt to replace, don't forget to replace the housing gaskets with new .

Own a mtd single stage 21" snowthrower ( model

OH YEAH,. I am pretty sure that you have reverse threads on this. Try PB Spray (Penetrating Blaster available in most hardware & automotive stores,. it is a cousin to wd-40 and understand it has superior penetrating ability to get in there,. if you use it -- follow the directions and let it penetrate for about ten minutes.. The only other thing is that to be sure it is reverse direction you may need to try it both ways - perhaps use a 6-point (rather than a 12-pt) socket provided you can get it in there. In addition, try to PULL the wrench or tool TOWARDS you, in stead of away, for the obvious reason it is easier to get more torque, but also that if it slips, you do not break you knuckles apart!!

Finally, you may also need to go to the next level and apply some HEAT directly on the critter rapisly to get it to swell a bit, be careful not to overheat as the entire unit heats up - all of it shall swell together. Finally with heat if it doesn't work, you will have to wait for it to cool ENTIRELY before giving another crack at it.

PS, you may also be able to extend a wrench or ratchet with a pipe to gather more torque on it.

Good Luck withh the project and don't forget a "bigger hammer" method which may be used in combination to apply sharp torque 'hits' to give it a jarring momentum..

Best regards
