Question about Maytag Dehumidifiers

1 Answer

Dehumidifier Our Maytag dehumidifier, in our finished basement, was turned off for the winter. We turned it on last week, and although it was running, it was not taking any moisture out of the air. I took the hose out of the sump and put it into a bucket, and ran the appliance for a few hours, and it was bone dry. The readout stayed at 70-75 % for the whole week that we thought we were dehumidifying the air. Any way to solve this on our own, or do we 1) Spring for repairs or 2) Buy a new one? This one is only 3-4 years old, purchased at Home Depot. Our old one lasted at least 20-30 years! Don't know what kind it was...we got it 2nd hand. What does that tell you about quality then and now? Anyway, I'd appreciate any help you can give! Thanks!

After reading comments and complaints from other frustrated Maytag owners, I just went out and bought a new LG EnergyStar dehumidifier. I'm taping the receipt inside a plastic bag, along with the user manual, to the side of the machine. Hope this one works for a LONG time! Ronnisue

A challenge dehumidifier not collecting water

If the room tempature is close to 60, the coils may be frozen (completely encased in ice). If this is the case, move it where the water can drain off - about 1 gallon which may NOT run into the drain bucket.
I out mine over the floor drain.
Turn off and it will defost over night.
Only specially made dehumidifers work below a room temo of 60 degrees (the temp of a basement in winter).
Does it need to be running? A digital humidity sensot from Radio Shack is cheap and may tell you the humidity is OK - only 50% or less.

When do you use the dehumidifier?

In areas with poor circulation and humidity over 80%.

Runs, but overheated, tripped outlet causing freezer full of rotten food

There was a recall on these - it depends on the age.  I bought mine in 2003 or 2004, and they sent a repairman out to replace a circuit board.  Call Maytag to see if yours was in the recall.
