CHARGING MY GARMAN GPE C330. DO I LEAVE THE GARMAN ON OR OFF WHEN CHARGING . THE BATTERY WAS DEAD ON MY WAY BACK FROM MY LAST TRIP.IT WAS OK GOING UP I HAD IT PLUGGED IN TO CIG LIGHTER BUT GARMAN SEND...

Disconnect from cigar lighter and connect to the USB port of your computer or any AC adapter over night. By morning the battery will have recharged and be ready for use. This seems to happen with the GPS is left connected to a vehicle's cigar lighter for an extended period of time. You can do this USB / AC adapter recharge procedure as often as needed.

I hope this helps!

My garmin does not operate plugged in to my car nor by battery

You have not said why that is....

Have you fully charged the battery prior to using in the car?

Using the power from the 12v plug in a vehicle will not "charge" the internal battery, but tends to maintain it somewhat. If the fuse in the end of the 12v connector plug is blown and the battery in the unit is low then this will cause the unit to shut down or fail to fire up.

Please check both, the units battery level and the fuse in the cig lighter plug and the plug that connects the unit to the cig lighter outlet.

Now the second half of your statement:

Nor by my battery

It is either not charged ( AC charger) or it has reached the end of its life which if used correctly is about 2 years. If the life of battery is shortened , then it is by a common practice of misuse. This misuse is to have the unit plugged to the car 12v when staring the engine.

1) it damages the battery life
2) It can and does damage the SIIRF chip, which is responsible for connecting to the satellites

I suggest that if it does not charge over a 10 hours Max period to its full state, then replace the battery immediately to avoid damage to the electronics from battery leak.

Charging a Garmin Nuvi 260W

Generally most batterys are left on the charger overnight, thats a good way to ensure a full charge, but as you will be using it in your car, it doesn't matter much as power is always available.

To ensure best possible battery life when you have a brand new battery, charge it fully and then drain it almost to 0% Draining most batterys into 0% will be harmfull instead of helpful, I assume the nuvi uses a Li-ion battery so draining it fully is not a good idea, drain it almost fully and then charge it fully.

And you are good to go, repeat the process if you leave the unit unused for a month or two for best battery life.

Thank you,

Yes it can be charged on the computer, but the ac is the fastest with cig lighter second. They are much much faster ways to charge it. So it depends on how you charge it.

Unit fails to maintain charge

You are correct, most GPS units use a lithium ion rechargable battery, typically they loose there ability to retain a charge after about a year or so depending on use, resulting in the unit having to be always plugged in.

You probably could replace the battery on your own if you could get one, (needs to be soldered into the mainboard) however GARMIN does not sell battery's to consumers, they state that a battery can only be replaced by a garmin service tech.

Check the link below for contact info for garmin.

Hope this helps

Garmin nuvi 660 GPS

1) tap "where to" then "go Home" an option should pop up to save your current location as home, or type in an address.

2) tap "where to", then select the option you desire.  You can choose address if you know the address or select an icon that matches the type of business that you are looking for. The unit will list the business in order starting with the closest one. Tap the business you want and it should calculate the best route.

3)The battery should be fully charged before you use it on battery only, but it's ok to plug the gps in and use it.

4) If you leave it plugged in it will not damage your battery and you will always have a full charge for when you need to carry it.

Garmin c340 gps freezes up

Avoid buying Garmin GPS. Their units have a non user replaceable battery that last about 2 years. After that, you have to send the unit to Garmin to replace the battery and be hit with at least $150 plus shipping. Possibly more if they need to fine tune something else. Look at other brands with easier battery replacement such as Sony, Navigon, etc. Garmin is a total rip off.
