Fridge makes an odd rattling or woodpecker like sound intermittently. What could this be? Thanks.
If you have an icemaker, that would be the sound of either the mechanism emptying the cubes or the water valve shutting off. If the water valve is going bad, or the switch that shuts off the water valve is going bad, the water valve may 'chatter'. If this is the case, try shutting off the icemaker, or even the water supply to the unit to see if it stops.
If you don't have an icemaker, then the circulation fan may be rattling a bit or has something in it, like a bit of paper. Circulation fans are typically behind a panel in the freezer sectionon most models.
Some units rattle the metal cooling pipes a bit when the compressor motor starts up. This is a more metallic clanging sound.
If it's a very sharp repeated clicking noise, that may be the sound of the motor-start capacitor going bad.
