Question about Altec Lansing ATP 3W Computer Speakers
Well, I'm thinking like you in that only part of the circuit board in the subwoofer box is bad, since it's feeding a signal to the desktop speakers. You might take a shot at it, it's a lot cheaper than buying the whole board, I would think, but check before you change it out- sometimes the ICs are custom made and hard to get, if not impossible- hence, they make you buy the whole board (this happens a lot these days with all appliances).
The only way you can know for sure is to troublshoot it with a scope (minimum) and shematic, and possibly some other high tech equipment, if you have access to it (audio generators, etc.).
Before you change the IC out, inspect the circuit board carefully (with a loupe or magnifying glass) for bad or cracked solder joints- they can occur with time and/or heat and open up, and merely need to be resoldered.
Good luck, and hope this helps.
