I bought my compaq presario with windows me. but after twice having to use the system restore disk i switched to windows 2000, which i loved. but now, because of file sharing programs and other stuff, my computer is running like **** and i think i have to use the restore disk again. my question to you is, if i use the restore disk, will my os go back to windows me or stay windows 2000. and if it goes back to me, is there an easy way to put 2000 back on it? my freind at the time put 2000 on my computer. i dont know how he did it, but he did it for free. we are not friends anymore.

Re: my pc runs like ****...i want to restore it
If you use the restore disk it will return it to ME. The only other option for wanting Win 2000. If you have a copy of the disc you merely need to insert it. Then go through the steps to format then install windows. (Note: All information will be lost so back up all important data before reinstalling Windows.) Definetly do not use Win ME. Good luck, Lee

You can use almost any restore disk to restore the operating system, but you must have a product key for that specific version of windows. Even then, it might not work if the manufacturer has coded that version of Windows to be one of their product keys. Also, even after you do restore the system, you will have to go to the HP (HP bought Compaq) website to download the drivers for your system.
do you have the original restore disk? do you have a Windows operating system disk? you will be required to have either one of these ... make sure your bios is set to boot CD rom then HD then start PC with disk in CD rom follow prompts ...
If Compaq doesn't have one no one else will either.
Have you tried the recover clean up utility? Available as a download (link below)
My guess is that if it will not restore something is wrong with the hard drive. Have you contacted HP to ask them what it means?
Another option is to buy and install windows and download the drivers from Compaq/HP.Same link
Hi. Azrul here. Here is 2 of my best solution for your problem:
1. Online support from your PC's manufacturer. Restart your PC using a Windows XP/Vista CD and download all the related drivers for your PC online (you will need your compaq presario model number for this)
2. There is also an option to purchase the restore disc online. Depending on the age of the PC that you purchased, just google for "Compaq" or "Hewlett-Packar"and get the restore disk from there.
Use the restore disk that came with the 4505 to restore it , then upgrade it to 98 with an upgrade disk. These can be found online still of ya search around or at a neighbors house *wink*
I believe the 5190 disks wil not work as they have the incorrect drivers for the other system.
I'm not you people.
(Please keep track of the user who you ask a question too).
When you installed windows 2000, (If you formatted the entire drive during install), you might have taken out the small partition that holds data for a system restore. No version of windows likes
you going backwards. In order for you're system restore CD's to work you'll need to format the hard disk drive. Windows will not install if Windows 2000 is found on the drive. The fastest way to get Windows 2000 off the drive without deleting any other partitions Compaq installed would be to go to the hard disk drives manufacture's site & download their setup tools/utilities. You'll be able to creat a bootable floppy disk that will function in a dos-like mode out side of windows. You'll be able to format the Windows 2000 partition. Once that is done you will be able to incert the restore CD (s) & install Compaqs windows XP.
You may need to pull the drive in order to see who made the drive. EX; Seagate, Smsung, Maxtor ect. Here is the link for Seagate. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools Every manufacture has similar bootable floppy software. Read the instruction provided by the manufacture on how to create the floppy disk & how to run it.
Call the manufacture and see if they would be willing to send you a restore disk. Also not a cheap way but you could by new windows xp and re-install it. System restore could get you pretty far back but it doesn't allow you to re do the whole hard drive. What is the operating system?
