Question about LG MG64 VHS VCR

1 Answer

In my LG VCR whenever I load a tape in after about 10 seconds the blue video doctor screen comes up with a "please clean". This problem started at exactly the same time I noticed the audio won't switch from stereo to mono or vice versa in the "audio options" menu. Before this problem when a tape was inserted and played the audio would automatically switch to hi fi stereo after 10 seconds but now the video doctor screen comes up instead. I've already cleaned the video heads, please help!

I wiped the video drum and video heads with tissue dipped in alcohol solution. Actually this problem started after I did this. Could I have damaged the hi fi stereo audio in some way? Is there any way to fix the problem?

Head Doctor OSD reports "clean heads"

Yes it could well have. Depends also on how you clean the heads. The best method is to take of the top cover of the VCR and with some Servisol Video 40 spray - spray and wipe with cotton buds all the surfaces the tape touches. You might have to do this several times. More if the video is in a room where someone smokes! If that doesn't work the Video head might need to be replace.

PS you can't get the Servisol at places such as Maplin (UK) or Radio Shack (USA) and online sites such as Amazon and E-bay.

most of these units use two sets of video heads on the drum===one set for sp/slp and another for lp;

Get someone to open it up and carefully wipe the video heads----You Tube used to have video instructions for this, pretty simple stuff.

Cleaning tapes never work---if cleaning does not correct it---you have a bad video head.

My VCR won't play my movies! The tapes are fine its just when I put the tape in it just shows a scraggly screen. Everything is plugged in but my movies won't play. What do I do?

If the vcr is running the tape, your video head is probably dirty, try using a cleaning tape if you have one. The second option is use a brand new blank tape T120 and set the the machine to sp speed (2hr running time) and let the tape run the full course. The third option is to remove the lid of the vcr and carefully clean the video head with a swab dipped in rubbing alcohol rotating the head by hand as you proceed allowing several minutes to dry before loading your tape.

Lost manual, can't get VCR to play

There are several Philips and Magnavox DVD/VCR combos that have sepearate video connectors for the DVD and VCR side. Double-check the yellow composite cable that is plugged into the back of your Magnavox - it should be plugged into an area that says either "DVD/VCR" or "VCR". If you are currently using red, green, and blue video cables, you will need to add a second video cable - a yellow composite would be easiest. The reason for this change is that red/green/blue cables will only operate the DVD side on most Philips/Magnavox players - that is just the way they decided to design them. If you happen to find a model number listed on the back of your combo unit, and have the model number of your television, I can take a second look at it, and tell you exactly which connections to make. Good luck!

TV SCREEN IS JUST A BLUE PICTURE,BUT HAS SOUND

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand it would appear that the VCR section of the combo unit would require a bit of cleaning. Specifically, head cleaning. The easiest approach is to use a VHS tape head cleaner.

The other post of "tv turns on then 5 seconds later shuts off" would be the auto-protect kicking in. This indicates that a likely hardware fault exists. Try to initially reset the unit by unplugging from the mains for an extended period. Otherwise it would require opening the unit for voltage measurement/diagnosis.

Pls post back updates. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Hold down the power button (or the vcr button if on a combination remote) for six seconds. This will unlock the child lock feature of the vcr.

Video image problem- Blue screen?

If your unit is fairly new, your VCR part might be the problem.Take it back!
If you have this unit for awhile, two things:
1. You need a professional A/V repair guy to clean up and check your VCR head.
2. The rental VHS tape is dirty.
Good luck!

One possibility is the tracking/audio head is dirty. Remove top cover of VCR, this head sits just to the right of the rotating video head. Use a cotton swab moistened with rubbing alcohol, or other video head cleaner and clean this head, especially the lower edge, as the tracking info is recorded along the lower edge of the tape (if memory serves). Another possibility is a problem with tape travel past this head. If the tape is lifting or moving up or down, even slightly as it passes this head, tracking will be lost, hence your blue screen & bad audio. This could be observed by playing a tape with the VCR cover off.

Try to playback the tape and the screen is all blue

your heads motor ( drum ) cable may have have come loose or is dirty - since the cleaning tape made some difference the heads were dirty or almost worn out ( cleaner tape is abrasive ) so now there isn ' t enough signal ; if your date and time display worked only in play ? ( still works for camera record video ) your guides were out of alignment - and the cleaning tape took your guides even further out of alignment ( alignment here starts at $ 50 + shipping )
