Question about Canon Digital Cameras

1 Answer

I have the HV 20 HD camcorder. I need to erase ALL THE STILL PHOTOS AND yet I think I accidently "protected" them and they won't erase. I need help with both unprotecting and erasing all the photos. Can you help me please?

I did look in the book and that's why I posed the question here.

I don't understand what "just initialize the card" means. what the heck does Initialize the card mean. I barley know where the card is. What you need to tell me is step 1. click this. step 2. push that and tell WHERE THE BUTTON OR CLICK IS.

Thanks - often times experts forget that newbies don't even understand the words used in these so called instructions.

    Still very muddled Claudia

WOW! I did it! It worked! Now of course you are my hero and yes I will take your suggestion....

In the future I will "request step-by-step instructions". Sorry that you were frustrated. You were dealing with a person who hates to read all those endless instructions Re: everything from vacuum cleaners to cell phones! It is exhausting. I really do care about using this wonderful camcorder which I really couldn't afford and I hope you will be there in the future when I get stuck on something else. Can't thank you enough. You have made my day!

Image protection and erasing are covered on pages 64 and 65 of the manual (you can view/download the manual here). If you are going to erase all images, you can just initialize the card (see page 65). It will erase all images, even protected ones.

I apologize. You seemed to have some understanding of what had happened and what needed to be done to correct the issue, so I assumed that you understood the menu system and moving around in it.

Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy an HV20 so all I have to go by is the manual. But I will try to figure out the steps based on the manual.

    1. With the card inserted, set the tape/card selector switch (on the right side of the unit) to Card, and the Power switch to Play.

    2. Press the Func switch (back of unit near bottom). Use the Joystick (above Func switch) to scroll down to Menu on the LCD. Press the Set switch (push in on joystick).

    3. You should see Card Operations highlighted on LCD. Press the Set switch again.

    4. Scroll to Initialize. Press the Set switch again.

    5. Scroll to Compl. Init. Press the Set switch again.

    6. Scroll to Yes. Press the Set switch again.

May I suggest that in the future you request step-by-step instructions, so that neither you nor the person trying to help you gets frustrated. (Obviously, I don't think that this deserves the rating of 'Inappropriate'.)

How to Convert Camcorder AVCHD MTS Videos to Netgear EVA9150 ?

Convert/Play Panasonic/Canon/Sony AVCHD MTS Files to Netgear EVA9150 Suitable Formats for Playing

The Netgear EVA9150 is the successor to the EVA8000, which won a Best Buy award in our last group test. The new model has some significant improvements, including an easily accessible 500GB hard disk and support for an even wider range of HD video formats and protected WMA-DRM10 files. Netgear EVA9150 offers equally strong video support as follow:

Video file formats: AVI, DivX, Xvid, WMV9, MOV, M4V, VOB, MPG, MP1, MP2, MP4, ISO, IFO, MKV (with AC3 only), TS, M2TS, PS

Audio formats: MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, FLAC, WMA-Pro, M4A, M4P, AC3, DTS Passthrough, PCM, LPCM

From above info, we can find MTS format is not supported by Netgear EVA9150, but now many AVCHD camcorders like Panasonic HS900, TM-700, TM80, Panasonic AF100, Panasonic HDC-SD5, Panasonic SD900, Canon Vixia HD Camcorder, Canon VIXIA HFM300, Canon HF M41 HD, Sony HDR-SR8E, Sony CX700V, etc give recordings with .mts as extension, which are not supported by Netgear EVA9150. So if you want to play MTS files from camcorders to EVA9150, I will recommend two ways to achieve it.

First Method, you can rename the MTS extension to M2TS or TS, it will play fine. But his method may not work with all the MTS files.

Second Method, download a powerful MTS Codec software. Aunsoft Final Mate is such a MTS decoder which helps to decode and convert camcorder MTS files to WMV, MPG, AVI, MP4, MOV, VOB etc with high quality in fast speed. Then you can put MTS streams to Netgear EVA9150 for playing.

Following are the steps about converting Panasonic/Sony/Canon AVCHD MTS videos for Netgear EVA9150.

Step1. Import AVCHD MTS videos to Aunsoft Final Mate.
Launch Final Mate, click on Resource Tab and click Add button to browse your PC and select the path stored your video files. Then all AVCHD clips stored on PC hard drive will be listed on Resource Tab.

Step2. Convert MTS files to WMV/MPG/AVI/MP4/MOV/VOB, etc for Netgear EVA9150.
Select all the files displayed under Resource Tab by using Ctrl + A. Then drag and drop them to Movies Tab to create a new movie and join clips into one. There will be a pop-out window asking for creating a single movie or multiple movies, you can choose "Create A Single Movie" to merge all MTS files into one for conversion.

Step3. Start conversion from MTS to Netgear EVA9150 supported formats
Click on Export button and follow Common Formats > HD Video > HD WMV, HD MPG, or HD AVI, or HD MP4, or HD MOV, etc to convert MTS format to Netgear EVA9150 supported format.

Tips:
You can edit your videos like trimming, cropping, deinterlacing, applying effect, adjusting volume, etc before conversion.

All my photos from yesterday were deleted, and I have no idea how. No one touched it. I was fiddling with the settings last night. Could I have accidently set it to auto-delete or something?

Hi,

I think you accidently selected FORMAT option from settings, Formatting the memory card erase all the data including protected images and other file types. So, once you formatted the memory card there is no way to restore them.

Thanks...!!

I cannot get the camera to erase, or delete all imiges. It pops back to protected, or busy. What am I doing wrong? I have erased before with no problem, but not now. I have messed with everything on it I...

Sometimes SD cards have locks on the back of them. I cant say this will fix your problem, but if the memory card is locked it will not allow you to delete the photos. If the photos are on your camera's memory, try playing with the options and see if they are protected for any miscellaneous reason.

Protection problem

Easy solution:

1) Put the sd card into your computer
2) Copy all the photos to your computer. User Windows Explorer to just drag the folders from the card.
3) Format the card

If you insist on having the photos back on the card, then just copy them back to the card using Windows Explorer reversing step 2.

Camera wont back up to memory card

Hi there.
Check to make sure the write protection is turned off on the memory card itself, the write protection tab is located on the left hand side of the card and is usually coloured white.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Protected card on my camera

Check your owners manual about protected photos. There is a setting in the camera's setup that keeps you from accidentally erasing photos.

My daughter looked to check the memory and accidently erased photos. Is there any way we could get those photos back?

As long as the memory card has not been formatted it is possible to retrieve images that have accidently been deleted. Search in google for image recovery software from media cards . There are a lot of free software sites that allow you to recover images yourself.
