Question about Zenith Televison & Video

1 Answer

I was watching the tv when there was a loud pop, picture went out and the popping continued in rapid succession. There was also some smoke coming out the top of the cabinet. I turned off the power with the remote but there was still some popping until I pulled the plug from the wall. Took off the lower back part of the cabinet but couldn't see any evidence of electrical arcing or shorting. Nothing. It does nothing when plugged in now. Any ideas? Model# is R40W46 Zenith Rear Projector.

Thank you for your response. My son works in the electronics industry and thinks he can fix it if he has a service manual. Was your estimate for repairs parts or service performed by a shop? Also wonder why I can't see any damage of any kind. Nothing fried, discolored or melted. I know it's an old set but it was used for only about 25 months when this happened

    Thank you,

Those were the filtering electrolytic capacitors exploding - the smoke was the electrolyte that was projected out as steam. If the popping has continued until the mains has been pulled then the entire power board has been fried beyond repair. and the damage to the rest of the tv is also extensive.
This is an old tv, with an old CRT technology, it can be repaired, just that it would cost you a fortune - at least $600.
My advice: the tv should be considered as dead. Time for a new one.

Take a closer look at the power transformer, even smell it - you'll see.
The price was for the parts and labor at your local shop- a dealer will cost you 50% more. To be more precise: $280 for a new power board, $150 for a new flyback transformer, $25 for a new power transistor and another$25 for the rest of the parts (which most surely have been fried). I estimated just 2 hours of labor at $60 , thinking that you can find a cheap good shop.

What is the phone # for Philips?

Sounds like a power supply went smoke or a capacitor burst maybe.
You could pop the back open and do a visual and record what you find and return here and we will see what we can do.

Picture went out on p50hdm Vizio Plazma tv after loud POP

It's either the backlight lamp or backlight inverter is busted due to a power failure or fluctuation. Here's how to determine which is which:
  1. Grab a flashlight.
  2. Turn on the TV.
  3. Shine the flashlight onto the screen.
  4. If you cannot see any display even a faint one, the backlight inverter is dead, else the backlight lamps are busted.
  5. Replace which ever is the culprit.

While watching the tv, there was a sudden loud, sharp pop, sounding like a gun shot, and the picture went blank

Sounds like either something went pop on the main pcb or in the power supply. Will need a repairman to take a look. & Just a caution if you're feeling adventurous, don't do it yourself unless you know what you're doing!!

Tv went out after loud pop and has clicking noise does not turn on

If you have a Sony DLP, then the loud pop you heard is your lamp.  The lamps last approx. 4K-6K viewing hours.  Read your manual for replacement part number to reorder and very simple to replace yourself.
