In the first place the external hard drive is not made for use as main drive ..but just for aditional storage and backup...You will never be able to install an operation system that works on it ...so if you need more drive space just add another Hard drive either on Ide or sata ..and there are available these days very large ones on both kinda controllers..Or just replace it with another one on the same specifications for the plug and power plug ..only larger in capacity ...
The external one if you already bought it ...use it to copy the files you do not want to keep in computer so make more space available ..
The method is to attach it on the computer ..either on firewire or USB ...(there are only these kind ) and after that you will find it in My computer folder like another drive...Single one if you do not partitioned it ...or multiple new ones if it has more than one partition on it ..The letters of the newly attached Hdd will be other than the ones used by your internal one ...usually the following ones in the alphabet except the ones already used..
after that just cut and copy files on it .You can reattach it when ever you need to store more data that you do not use every day ..
If you have more questions add a comment under my answer..

If both your Dell and the hard drive have USB ports you may be able to download directly. Other wise you may purchase an external drive and load the data to that. The external drive almost certainly will connect by USB.

How to recove Seagate external hard drive data?

Probably, the new operating system cannot recognize your Seagate external hard drive. You can connect the Seagate external hard drive to another computer to copy data to another device. If the problem still exists, you might need to perform data recovery. You can free download the data recovery software: http://www.icare-recovery.com/seagate-recovery/seagate-external-cannot-be-recognized.html

I got an old laptop and I bought a new toshiba laptop I just wanna ask how do I transfer my application and files from my old laptop to a new one using external hardrive, also wat external hardrive, and also...

Hi,
You can transfer the data files only from the old laptop to the new one. You cannot transfer the installed applications/software. Software are required to installed again on the new laptop afresh.
To transfer the data you can use external portable hard disk, which can be connected to the PC using any USB port (just like pen drive) and you can copy - paste the required data to the external disk just like you copy data from one partition to another. After copying the required data, you can connect the external drive to new laptop and copy the data to the new laptop. You can use external drive of any brand/ capacity. However, it is better to have an external drive with larger capacity, so that you can transfer the data in one go.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Question about transferring files from computer hard drive.

Is your other drive an external or an internal drive??? If external then attach it to the USB port and see it as an additional drive in My Computer. Then you can use it as any other drive.
If an internal drive then you will have to purchase an adapter that can take this drive and get connected to the PC/laptop to through the USB port. Again visible on My Computer as additional drive and can be used such.

Unable to transfer files from an acomdata external hard drive.

Borrow a friends "hard drive docking station" and remove the hard drive from the other external drive and place in the docking station and see if you can read the drives contents. The docking stations can be purchased at Best Buy or Office Depot if you want your own. Your external drive could have a faulty power supply or you really could have a hard drive that has developed bad sectors and that is a disaster for your data. When a drive starts acting up, you really need to act and transfer important files to a new drive or burn the data to DVD's.

How do you transfer data from this external hard drive to a new internal hard drive that was just installed

Hello,

Turn your computer on. Plug the external drive. It should show in My computer window. Explore the external drive (by clicking on its icon in My computer). Point and select all you want to copy (CTRL A selects All) CTRL C. ( all that is selected will be marked for copying). Go to folder where you want to copy the files. Open the folder and CTRL V.

Hope it helps

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

Need to transfer copied files to x301 after full restore

create a new folder in your hard-disk and first try to copy 1-2 files from the external hard-drive to the new folder (copy any data/work/images you have stored/created not any files of windows folder or root of c: drive)

if the above copy works then copy back all except the c: root and these folders - Windows folder, Document & settings, Program Files
