Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

I tried going through the set-up function on my wireless router and as I was completing it asked for a username and set-up (similar to when initially setting the router up where you enter 'admin' for both the username and password. I tried entering 'admin' again for each the username and password and cannot get back in to the router set-up. I'm unsure what the username and password would be. How could I find out what the username and password are or bypass this step and go back to set-up?

How do I set the Linksys router back to its default settings?

Hello dabb481, to reset the settings on the router, try resetting it. There should be a button on the back of the router called "reset" try that option. Otherwise go to Command Prompt and type in without quotes "ipconfig" it should be something similar to or <----- Try that. Then log into the router. You should know the password and username. "username should be Admin, same with password if you haven't changed it" I hope this helps.

Hello I just got a new phone I can't get on the web with it. I need my wireless password. When the router was set up I do not remember what the password is. Can you help? I have the Linksys...

For you to obtain the wireless password you need to access the Wireless Settings Page of your router. I've listed below the steps on how to do it.

For you to access your router you need a working computer that is connected to the router and open a browser type to he address bar and it will ask you for a username and password. The default username is "leave it blank" and the default password is admin. Go to the Wireless Settings Page and take not of the SSID or Network Name and Network Key or Passphrase. The Network Key what you need, Make sure you're trying to connect to your network which is the SSID.

I can not find the web site to log on and change my password for my Dynex router i am afraid that other users can log on and use it help

hi. I think I can help you with this.
First, make sure internet is directly connected to the router with a lan cable from the cable modem.

Next, connect your laptop to the router's lan ports with a lan cable, instead of attempting to connect to it wireless-ly.

Next, open a browser, and go to this address:

Next, if you didn't assign a username and password, when it asks for them, leave them blank, and press enter

If you have already given it a username and password, use them to log into the router.

Then, go into security setting and select a security level...i.e. wep, wpa, and so on, and give it whatever you want to have for those, but make sure you write them down, as you will need them to log into the internet, as well as logging into the router page.

After you do everything you need on settings, click the save button if there is one.

If not, then click log-out

Next, disconnect the wire from the router to your laptop, and unplug both modem and router.

Next, plug in modem first, and wait 45 seconds for it to initialize, and then power up the router.

Within about 30 seconds or so, it should initialize, and be ready for you to use it.

Thenlog on to that internet connection, and enter the username and password that you gave the connection, and you should be good to go.

How to lock wifi?

To secure your wireless router you should specify a WPA or WPA2 key (depending what your router supports).
To set it up please follow the steps below:
Make sure that you are connected to the wireless router, either wirelessly or directly with an ethernet cable.
Open internet explorer and type on the address bar above and press enter. This the ip of your router. In some cases it may be

The router will probably ask for a username and password which if you haven't set it will probably be "admin" for the username and "admin" or a blank password.

Then go to wireless settings and choose wireless security. Choose WPA2 if it is available (avoid WEP as it not very secure). Then enter a passphrase that you will remember and save your settings.

When you try to connect from your laptop or other wireless device it will ask for the type (WEP,WPA, WPA2) and the passphrase that you entered.

That's it!

New password

In order to enter passwords, and secure your wireless network, you must log onto your wireless router's configuration settings page (the webpage used to initially setup the router). To get to this page, you must enter the router's ip address ( by default for Linksys routers) as the url (i.e. Once you do this, you will be asked for a username and password (Username: admin, or <blank>, and Password: admin, by default). Successfully logging in should bring you to the router's settings page. From here, you can go to the administrator tab, change the login password**, or go to the wireless tab, wireless security sub-tab, select a type of encryption if desired (WPA2-Personal/PSK or WPA recommended), and set the desired passkey**.
**NOTE: When changing settings, before going to another page, make sure to click Save Settings at the bottom of each page to keep the settings.
Here is a page to help with what you can do in order to secure the router further.

Locked out of wireless router .

On the rear of the router is a recessed reset button. You'll need something like a pen point or a straightened paperclip to press it. Turn off the router (pull out the AC adapter plug), the plug it back in while pressing the reset button. After the lights on the router quit blinking, let go of the button. This will reset the router to factory settings. When you go to // and are prompted for username and password, the username is blank and the password is admin. (It's possible the username may be admin and the password is password. This was in some versions of the router.) Then you can set your router up again the way you want.

I want to add a wireless laptop to my exsisting broadband moderm can find your network key within your router settings.

Here's a rough guide:

1. Type your router IP address, eg or whatever is correct for your model, into a web browser address bar

2. Enter your router username and/or password at the prompt. The defaults for D-Link are username: admin and password left blank: but if you have set a router password/username, please enter these.

3. In the router user interface, go to the section headed Home > Wireless. Your network key will be here, labelled Pre-shared key or similar.

This Dlink tutorial has some helpful screenshots.

Hope this helps; however, please come back to Fixya if this doesn't work or if you need more information.

the default router password is admin, no username. if that didnot work, possible that the router password is change during initial set up. try your own personal password

wireless password is different from the router password. if you enable the router wireless security and you dont know what it is, you can access the router setup page and go to the wireless security tab to get your wireless password

Can't connect or even get past setup.

ok, first question:  Are you running the setup CD while the computer has a physical cable connecting it to the router, or are you trying to do this completely over wireless?'

For most wireless routers, initial setup works best using a physical cable.

also, it's possible that the manual reversed username and password:  try USERNAME Admin, BLANK password.
