HP Officejet 9110 empty or expired cartridge error
You were a bit vague in your report as to what the exact error is that you are plagued with. Perhaps you have more than one. The 9100’s ink cartridges are “smart cartridges.” They each have a chip in them that reports various cartridge statuses directly to the printer. Diagnosing the problem correctly requires the identification of the particular error message. You can find a list of the error messages and what they mean here:
I think that you are experiencing an “INK CARTRIDGE EXPIRED” error. This error is not related to the ‘volume’ of the ink within the cartridge(s) but rather to the actual expiration ‘date(s)’ on the cartridge(s). The expiration date is encoded on the chip that resides on the cartridge. The actual expiration date appears to relate to the date two years after the date that is stamped on the cartridge label. I can’t change the expiration date on the chip—at least not easily or inexpensively—but I have discovered a way around it.
The date on the cartridge corresponds to the date on the printer itself. You just need to send the printer back in time to a period before the expiration date and you should be able to print again. A time machine is probably out of the question. Instead, reset the date on the printer to reflect a suitable date.
This could conceivably have some negative consequences that I haven’t experienced yet. I’ve only just discovered this ‘hack’. Though I haven’t tested it, the newly assigned, incorrect date will probably appear on any subsequently received fax transmissions. I can also conceive of networking issues if your printer is networked. Some network related instructions require that all network nodes (all devices on the network—computers, printers, etc.) report a time (and date) within just a few minutes of each other to communicate. You’ll just have to try it in your network and see if everything functions properly or within acceptable limits.
To change the date on the 9100 printer, you’ll need to access the ‘Maintenance’ menu. Just below the LCD panel on the front of the printer there are a series of buttons as follows:
[Return], [Up] & [Down], [Accept], [Left], and [Right]. They each have their own unique symbol, but I’m sure you can understand my descriptions. Press and hold BOTH, the [Up] and the [Down] buttons at the same time while you press and release the [Accept] button—then release the other two buttons. If you weren’t taken directly to the ‘Maintenance’ menu (# 10), then use the [Up] or [Down] arrow button to navigate to it and then choose the [Accept] button to select it. Similarly select the ‘Set date and time’ option, and follow the prompts to make the necessary changes using the appropriate buttons.
Once you have changed the date and time you may have to turn the printer off and then back on again before the printer will recognize the cartridge(s). In my case, the printer went through an extensive print head alignment.
