Hi,
The use of the self destruct feature is something that has caused many problems. Most of the time the problem is that the oven will not unlock. For you this may be better but then maybe not.....

The first thing to do is to turn off all the power to the unit at the breaker. This may reset the control of the oven and stop the fan. However if two of the wires are melted together this will have no effect and the fan will start again when power is applied. If there are wires melted together then finding the problem could be difficult, the wires often go places unseen and inspection can be difficult. A person familiar with the use of an OHM meter will have to isolate the problem and then find and replace the wires which can be very time consuming.

To bad that many brands incorporate this feature simply as a way to sell more product....

Here is a tip that I wrote also and it may help but it is more specifically geared towards the unlocking problem....

Gaggenau oven not self cleaning.

The self cleaning features only serves to keep manufacturers in steady sales of parts. Quite simply the oven can only take those temperatures a few times until they break. The heat burns out elements, damages fans, door locks and worst of all damages control boards which are not far enough from the heat source. It sounds like your control board is fried. Try turning it of at the breaker for 15 minutes by way of a reset.

Never use the self cleaning feature as stated here

Self cleaning lock handle does not unlock

Unplug power, wait one hower and plug cord back.

That should reset the oven, if it does not, the oven timer control is clearly defective and should be replaced , you find parts here.

Need manual for self cleaning, please?

Hello Mary;

You can get a user manual at the following website.

Locate your oven model number. It is located on a label either on the face of the oven when you open the door or on the side of the door. Put he model number into the website and you will get diagrams, component part numbers and manuals.

http://www.searspastsdirect.com/

I suspect the user manual is not going to help you. Tell me the model number and what is going on.

Manufacturers offer the self cleaning feature on ovens because customers like this feature and the ovens sell. Yet, the manufacturers engineers have not been able to provide a design that will protect all of the components from self cleaning temperature of 900-1,000 degree F.

When you go into the self cleaning model, the door will lock when you reach 500-550 Degree F. The oven temperature will raise to 900-1,000 degrees F. The oven door will not open until the oven temperature drops to 500 degree F after the self cleaning cycle is completed.

Now, You have a high temperature limit switch in your oven. If this switch fails, you will loose power to your control board and you will not be able to open the oven door.

If you have never used your self cleaning feature, the high temperature limit switch may have failed.

Do to the problems involved with the self cleaning feature, knocking out the control board from heat, additional heating element failure, and other components; It is in my professional recommendation as well as my fellow technicians not to use the self cleaning feature. If you do, do not run it for more than 1 hour instead for the manual 4 hours.

Self cleaning ovens

Perhaps it hasn't cooled down enough; or you may have to run the self-cleaning cycle again. The oven has to reach a certain temperature before it starts to turn the residue to ash.You may have interrupted its cycle.

It then has to cool off sufficiently to safely open the door.

I used the self-clean for the first time and my oven door is still locked and the display doesn't work at all. Model #YKESS908. What can I do to unlock the oven door? I have checked the circuit...

Hi

You can set the unit on self cleaning and then after 15 minutes stop the cycle, let it cool down for an hour and then open the door. If the issue remains then you'll have to replace the door lock assembly, then you can open the door with a coat hanger by pulling the latch towards you. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

H E L P !!! My oven made some noises this morning when my husband was wiping down the front of the oven door. Noise sounded like the "oven was going into clean mode"....but then only lasted...

Hello.

Please apply the solution this way!

To close an oven door when it's in the locked position and the door is open, press and hold the oven door light switch while following these simple steps:
  • Program the oven to self-clean.
  • Wait 20 seconds.
  • Cancel self-clean.
  • Wait 20 seconds.
To self-clean your wall oven, follow these simple steps:
  • Remove the oven racks.
  • Set your oven control to "Clean."
  • Select a cleaning time or choose a cleaning level: light, medium or heavy. For typical cleaning needs, we recommend that you select a cleaning time of three hours or choose the medium setting.
  • Select "Start." (To set a delayed start, see your Use & Care Guide.)

Note: For safety reasons, the oven door will remain locked until the oven cools down. When it is sufficiently cool, the door will automatically unlock.

Thanks for using fixya.

We used the self cleaning option and now we cannot get the oven door open. The lever is stuck in lock mode. Can you give suggestion?

Hello,

IF you can locate the model number tag (bottom left of door opening) you can look up the manual at www.geappliances.com

The only button on your stove that should make the door lock would be the clean button (self clean model) if that is pressed simply hit the clear/off or cancel key and wait for the door to unlock.

IF the self clean option ran for an hour or so, you will have to wait for the oven to cool down before the lock can unlock (safety feature)

I have the self cleaning feature and put it on medium clean which takes 3 hours. This was 4 hours ago and the oven is still hot and the door won't open

This is normal, don't panic! You have to let it cool off. Cool down can take up to 2 hours (after the clean cycle is done). The companies do not factor in cool down time into the length of the clean cycle. The oven reaches about 750 to 800 degrees during self clean so give it some time.
