Are you wanting to fix this or just replace it??
if it just hums its one of two things.
1 The capacitor ($10 at local electrical store)
2 Bearing have seized, ($150 for a technician to repair)

Thank you for posting your question here on

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. Check the pump for debris first. If it is clear and turns freely it's the motor. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. If you wish to continue to try to repair it yourself please comment with any questions you have as you work thru the pump and motor.

Replacement motors for that pump are commonly available. AOSmith makes one with part #STS1102RV1.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Thermostate kicks pump motor on ok. but when its time for the fan motor, all you here is a loud humming then the breaker blows

check for a failed start/run capacitor for the motor
if the motor spins freely then the humming will be a frequency hum because there is not enough power to start the fan running
the extra current will blow a cb

Motor hums but won't start

Most problems with humming motors are with the power input TO the motor (Not enough power to turn the motor)
I'm guessing it is a single phase compressor? If you have it connected to an extension lead, then, if you can, try plugging it directly into the wall, (you can lose vital power through the long lead itself) Second the capacitor attached to the motor could be on its way out or shot. You would need to get it tested, or if you notice anything bulging out of it, then you know it needs replacing. If all the above are ok, then you would need to get the motor itself checked out by an electrician, the bushes or coils are probably gone

Hope that helps

My thermal switch burnt so I replaced it with a 15 amp one. The original is a 17 amp. I could not find any around and the electrician says he never has seen a 17 amp one before. Problem is the unit tried...

If you are popping the circuit breaker, even after installing the new one (15 or 17 amps will make no difference), your motor is trying to work too hard and creating to much of a draw on the circuit for the breaker to handle. This is usually caused by too much friction somewhere. Things to check are:
1. The long thing on the motor is the start and/or run capacitor. If they're bad the motor will usually hum and try to start but won't spin at all and it usually trips the breaker. The capacitors can be tested to see if they still have the capacitance rated on the side of the case but you have to find someone with a testor, they're not a common tool. Most refridgeration repairmen have one.
2. The motor bearings. Try turning the motor by hand without the pump piston attached. It should spin very freely.
3. The piston to motor bushing/bearing should also turn with very little resistance.
4. The piston itself should ride in the cylinder fairly tightly but should move smoothly in it.
Replace anything causing the motor to work so hard that it's popping the breaker.

Electric dryer motor just hums, won't start trips breaker

If its tripping the breaker then it is pulling more current then it is supposed to. The motor is probably shorted out and needs to be replaced. There may also be another short inside the dryer somewhere. Unplug the dryer and open the panel on the back. Look for burnt wires or any signs of a short circuit. If you don't see anything or are unsure of what you are doing, contact a professional handyman and have them do the work.

Compressor runs and compress air,but when air setting is depleted compressor will not start to compress more air.If you waite it will start some times do think this might the compressor switch

If it doesn't try to start, then it could be the pressure switch. Another suspect could be the thermal overload on the motor. The motor (or just the overload) might be overheating and shutting the unit off, then allowing it to restart when it cools.

Is there any humming, or does it blow the breaker? When ot shuts off, do you hear a brief hiss of air?

If there is humming or breaker blowing on restart, or no hiss of air at shutoff, the pressure switch unloader valve is probably bad. If the air blows off, and there is no humming, and the compressor doesn't reliably start, it is probably the pressure switch. If pressure drops too low, give the pressure switch a tap with a screwdriver. If it starts then, the pressure switch is your problem.

I have a 115000 heater and when I turn on the switch the unit just hums and then it sounds like it blows an internal breaker and the humming stops

sounds like the motor start capacitor is bad causing the unit to stall and pop the internal circuit will need to remove the cover and look for the silver can looking component that connects to the will then need to get a motor start capacitor to repair the problem ..these usually cost about 6-15 dollars at most appliance parts stores...or you can try a place like

Need a point setting for ao smith air compressor ac motor model number opa-0297 s# c56b72b2316508j2 work on air machine with motor installed motor will hum and trip breaker can we set points to stop trip...

try running up this motor when its not installed on the compressor,, if it still blows the trips the motor is faulty,, if it runs ok, but hums when reconted to the compressor the compressor if far to tight for the motor to turn the compressor,,,you can not reset the points in a breaker trip they trip at a set curent if the motor is pulling more amps than the trip is set for it will trip the trip to turn off the curent, the motor will pull far more amps than it should if its over loaded thats why its humming its trying to spin up it but cant so it just keeps pulling more and more amps till the trip cuts out

Motor hums then clicks off

Has the motor seemed a little slower in starting than usual? If so then you probably have a weak or defective motor capacitor. Try switching out with a new one. They are inexpensive.Try to turn the motor shaft at rear (under end cap) while it attempts to start. If the motor kicks on then replace capacitor.

The dryer won't start with a load in it. The motor doesn't spin.

Very likely. There could be a restriction in the blower, but these motors do burn out. Hope this helps!
