No, there are a variety of stihl bars as well as other brands. An MS290 is not a pro saw, so I'm assuming you're not a tree professional and would like something for good all-around use so I'd reccomend an Oregon power match or powersharp setup where you can attach the included sharpening device to the end of the bar, run the saw and it will automatically sharpen the chain in the field wherever you are without even removing it! You can go with the obvious choice of a STIHL combo like a rollomatic bar and some green designated chain, but it costs more and being a price-point saw, you may want to save a few bucks and go with an alternative. Another great bar for not a lot of money is the forester brand. They have their own catalog and line of bars and chains, and honestly any chain and bar combo will accept the stihl oiling system and provide adequate oiling properties for that particular setup. I have a collection of smaller as well as pro level saws and I own mostly stihl bars I've had for a while and maintain, but I also own a few Windsor, Oregon, and one or two forester bars and I have no complaints with any of them. I make my own chains from 100' spools, and depending on my application, the brand may come into play, but you don't need to stick with STIHL exclusively. However, for longevity, ease of use, performance and reliability, I will always own STIHL powerheads. I currently own an MS201T, an MS211, an MS392, an MS441, and an MS460, and have others I'm rebuilding to sell to future happy STIHL owners. My string trimmers are all the FS90R and FS110R models, my backpacks are all BR600 models, and I have two HT130 power tree pruners. I also run Mobil Super+ fuel and STIHL HP Ultra mix in all my equipment, which is the mix I reccomend to anyone looking to get the longest possible life from their equipment. I also reccomend allowing ANY piece of outdoor power equipment to be warmed up and cooled down at idle for atleast a minute prior to and after use, so the metal parts have a chance to return to their normal shape after use and to avoid distortion from abrupt full throttle use or shutdown. I am a STIHL Level II certified technician and have been working on STIHL at a certified level since 2006

Farm boss starts runs great until hot then stops dead let it cool and it runs what do I try?

Most likely needs to be torn apart, the cooling fins on the engine need to be cleaned regularly, also you have carbon build up inside muffler, there is a screen inside muffler, if not clean, you will eventually get a scored piston and cylinder wall, then you will need much more to fix the issue, also make sure you are using the correct ngk plug

How do I find a parts manual for a Stihl MS290 ?

I really don't want to be "that guy", but people who aren't trained STIHL mechanics or at LEAST mechanically trained, shouldn't work on higher end saws like STIHL, because people with a little bit of experience can mess something up, then blame the machine because they mess something up and start trashing the brand when it's their fault for not knowing what they're doing.

I have MS 290 chain saw I need replacement chain number 3003 812 6817 far boss blade looking for chain fit chain saw0.063 18 inch could you direct me other brands that will fit please

I would take the saw to a lawn and garden shop that works on chain saws. A chain can fit more than one type of saw and they will be able to match one up for you.

Need to replace chain on farm boss with 20 inch bar how do i get to sprocket to get old chain off

Release the chain brake. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the right hand cover over the drive end of the bar. With the cover off, the bar will slide back toward the engine and allow the chain to be removed. Note the direction of the cutting teeth! Clean the side of the engine where the bar fits to, and the small oil passages in the bar drive end that run from the large holes out to the chain groove on each edge. Also clean the entire chain groove. Fit the new chain to the sprocket, then insert the bar and work the chain onto it. Pull out on the bar until the chain fits fairly tight, then fit the cleaned cover over the drive. You may have to change the position of the chain adjustment screw a few turns to allow the adjustment 'tang' to drop into one of the large holes in the bar. Make sure the cover is fully seated, then run the fasteners down finger tight. Turn the chain adjuster screw CW until the chain pulls up to the bottom edge of the bar, but not so tight that you can't turn the chain by hand. Tighten the fasteners fully and recheck chain tension. Start the engine and run the tip of the bar near some cardboard at speed for a moment or two--proper oiling is indicated by a thin line of oil thrown onto the cardboard. Be sure to keep the chain teeth sharp and properly adjust chain tension--don't allow it to droop when cutting. Hope this helps!
