Question about Samsung CLX-3170FN All-In-One Laser Printer

1 Answer

The paper will jam when making a copy. I have cleared the paper from the door on the back of the machine. The paper dislodges in one piece. I do not see any more paper by lifting the top tray. Are they any more places pieces could be lodged? This is the first time this has happened. The printer was very warm when this occured. Could it be overheated?

The copy gets halfway down the page before getting jammed. But the top of the paper isn't bent. I will try the card stock and compressed air, but first I have to buy some!

To answer your last question first, any copy machine or printer that uses toner, by design, will get very hot in the back of the machine. This radiant heat is coming from the fusing unit, when acts as an oven to burn the toner to the paper; and generally overheating problems will not cause jamming. More than likely you have a physical obstruction blocking the paper path, my suggestion to you would be to take a thick piece of cardstock and manually pass it through the paper transport section. This act will force out any small paper dust or debris in the transport section; also, I'd recommend spraying some canned air through the path as well. Out of curiosity, when the paper jammed, did it appear to be bent or torn in a particular area of the page?

Let me know.

If there's no bending or ripping of the paper, then you most likely just have a dirty sensor or some bits of paper or paper dust blocking the path. Cardstock and canned air are the best items in your arsenal for this job.

Do those printer cleaning kits work better than the cardstock and air?

  • ronny29 Nov 17, 2010

I have the same problem, but my paper is bent, well, rounded about 3.5 inches from the bottom of the page. No ripping though. What is happening? This is really a problem.

I cannot print or copy . i see error 51

Error 51 is a paper jam code. Remove the paper tray in the front and the jam clear cover in the back (the light gray plastic piece in the center of the rear of the printer) and pull out any paper you can see.

Once you've removed the paper, the jam code should clear on the display, but if it doesn't, try resetting the machine. If the jam code is still there, that means there is still paper somewhere inside the machine. Check again to make sure you didn't miss any, and also lift the scanner bed to see if you can see any paper under there. (To lift the scanner, lift up with the tabs on either side until the scanner locks into place.)

PAper Jam light stays on

when you open the side door and look into the machine look down to where the paper comes up from the paper trays there is a small finger sensor there that sometimes get paper stuck in it if the paper was pulled from beneath. as long pair of tweezers should get it out or you can get a piece of heavier paper and feed it up from the side door at the bottom and it may dislodge the paper or make it more noticable be careful as sometimes the sensor can be knocked out of place>>>Good luck A

The "Paper Jam" light on my Sharp AL-1631 copier stays on

The paper detector on the fixing units have a history of going bad. The fixing unit is the hot roller above the drum inside the right door on the top. As the copy comes thru the rollers the paper hits a plastic lever that is spring loaded and located in the middle of the fixing unit. The sensor is all the way to the right side of the fixing assembly. If you move the lever in the middle you'll see a piece of plastic moving on the right, that piece comes out of the sensor and if can't reset the jam, that piece may not be resetting itself back inside the sensor. This is difficult to try to explain.
Good luck

PAPER JAM

try this
  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper.
  3. Also open the back cover of the printer if this model has one.
  4. Open any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the toner or ink cartridge.
  5. If necessary, remove the toner or ink cartridge. Place it away from light/ sun light to avoid damaging it.
  6. If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly. The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam.
  7. If the paper does tear, try rotating the roller gears manually to free the paper. Don't force anything, though. Do this step especially if the jam message comes up repeatedly without any obvious paper jam, there may be a small tear of paper inside.
  8. Ones the printer is free of paper Replace the toner or ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on.
  9. If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Reinspect the paper path.
  10. see alternative if the problem is still not solved.

alternative :
Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.

I cant recive any fax

Sometimes the plain paper in the tray underneath upsets the whole machine.

Open up the top of the machine, as if you were going to change the toner cartridge. Pull out the cartridge carefully to mae sure that there is not a piece of paper jameed underneath. Replace the catridge and close the top of the machine. when you close the top 'door' the machine will make a noise as if it is resetting itself - the 'jam' display may or may not clear at this point. Next, pull out the paper tray. You will need to stoop down to look into the gap where the tray normally sits. If there is a piece of paper jammed at the back this will need to be carefully removed. If you pull it out make sure there a re no fragments left int he machine - you can check this by oepning out the piece of paper removed and see if there are any pieces missing.
Finally, if all is clear, replace the paper tray (it would be worth topping up your supply of paper as the 'jam' message sometimes comes up when the machine has a low paper supply.

Hope this helps.

Docucolor-12 10-389 CODE

That is a fuser jam indication.

  1. Clear the Paper Jam and Obstructions in the Machine

  2. Make Sure the Paper is the Correct Size, Type, Weight, and Orientation

  3. Make Sure the Paper Supply Setting Matches the Type of Paper Loaded in the Paper Tray

  4. Load the Paper Trays Correctly

  5. Fan the Paper, Turn the Paper Over and Reload the Tray
If the above are all correct, you may just have a small piece of paper stuck on a sensor. Just has to be a small piece of paper directly on one of those. Also see if a sensor flag is dislodged. A sensor may be bad but not likely

Paper jam won't clear

Look for a small piece of paper remaining in the machine.
Also there may be a jam switch actuator that has fallen off.
