Question about Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED Film Scanner

2 Answers

After a disk crash, I replaced my Macintosh hard disk and the new disk has OS 10.6. My computer will not "find" my Nikon Coolscan 9000 scanner, and my Nikonscan 4 software, re-istalled from time machine, will not open. I downloaded Vuescan from the web. It says no scanner is connected to the computer, even though the cables are connected and the scanner is on. I downloaded Nikonscan 4.0.2 from th web. It will not install on my computer. What should I do? Do I need new driver(s) for the scanner itself, or will Silverfast work if I purchase that?

Nikon say they will not upgrade to the new Mac OS, ever. But will any other scanning software work? Eg silverfast?

Sorry to be ignorant, but what is a chipset? - John

Thanks Eagle338! After more poking around on the net, I found that VueScan supports the Nnikon Coolsan 9000 with Mac Os 10.6. Hooray! It provides a dirver, apparently. I spent $75 approx for the professional version and now it works fine. One can buy a simpler version of Vuescan for about half that price, not bad at all but it annoys me that Nikon won't support their own hardware, especially high-end expensive sacnners like the LS 9000. It took a while to figure it all out, but some people say VueScan is better software than Nikon Scan so maybe its all for the good in the end. Anyway. thanks. - John

Eagle338, I just posted a response but I erased it by mistak. Anyway, thanks for the help. It turns out Vuescan has a driver that runs the LS 9000 with Mac OS 10.6. I purchased Vuescan and the problem is fixed! But it annoys me that Nikon will not support its own hardware. Anyway, thanks for the help. Vuescan is the way to go, for anyone in a similar position. Best wishes, John.

Looks like driver compatibility issue. You should first install the chipset driver first and then try installing nikonscan again. If you can get me the make and model of your chipset, then I can find you a driver.

Chipset is a part of the motherboard, that manages the operation of all the other devices and ports(USB ports, PCI slots etc.,). Just read your previous comment and found that you talked with Nikon.Nikon coolscan includes the device driver for the same and if it doesn't work, nothing else will. You may want to revert to the older version of MAC OSX to resolve the issue. Silverfast does not support 10.6 either . Its only for MAC OSX may be upto 10.4 or 10.5

You may want to contact them to verify. If you are in the US dial (+1) 941-312-0690

If you are anywhere else call (+49) (0)900-1888853. I don't think it will work though

Thats great news. Yes pity that even reputed firms like Nikon, Dell force users to buy 3rd party software. Windows 7 and Mac OSX 10.5 and above are nighmarish Os(es) when it comes to drivers.

I have read it and posted a response. Glad to hear that you finally found something that would work with it. Bravo!

Hi. Based on Nikon there are no available software/driver for MAC OS 10.6 Snow Leopard yet. we need to wait a couple for them to create driver for this.

Hi! My computer (Macbook pro) doesn't seem to recognize my Nikon Coolscan IV software and I get the following message

You've not said what the message is but I suspect that the software is too old to be used on the macbook if it is running OS X 10.7 (Lion) or if you are running snow leopard, it may be a non-intel version of the software. It may be asking you to instal rosetta which would be on your snow leopard instal disk.

If the Nikon website does not have updated software you could try vuescan which according to this page http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/nikon_coolscan_iv_ed.html does work with the film scanner and you can download a demo version which you can trial before you buy. Hope this helps.

Nikon Coolscan 9000 not working w Mac Snow Leopard 10.6+

You're not going to be happy with this answer:

Nikon has formally sworn off doing ANY future software updates for their scanners. They stopped at 10.4 (pre-Leopard)

See

Yes, there are a LOT of people VERY unhappy with this answer, but we're all kind of stuck with it.

I have an intel macintosh I have nikon coolscan 8000 scanner I have leopard, latest update I have nikon 4.0.2 update for scanner I can not get it to work. I double click on Nikon icon on my dock,...

Nikon 4.0.2 isn't supported on 10.5

I suggest you look at VueScan which does work under 10.5 and 10.6 with your scanner, and they have a free download to test first

Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED can not be recognized by computer

I am having the exact same problem...cannot get the Coolscan 9000 to show up in Device Manager. One thing I did try (to no avail) was to run the regsweeper.exe file that comes with the Nikon scan disk. It clears your registry when you reinstall. It still did not work though so I have a lovely "shoebox" sitting next to my computer that is worthless!

Nikon Super Cool Scan 9000 ED doesn't start. No green light, no nothing.

There are now quite some cases on the internet mentioning that their ED 9000 (mine is a ED 8000) won't start anymore. These scanners easily seem to break, and Nikon offers no solutions at all, they even won't repair my 'old' 8000.

Nikon Coolscan 9000 not recognized by XP computer anymore....

I read and would like to thank, the person who mentioned this as a solution. It was stated that if you have more than one firewire on your computer, when you open the Nikon, both signals, or whatever happens in computerland, don't connect. Upon removing the drive in the other firewire, Nikon clicks in everytime. Answer: have only ONE active firewire at a time. You may need to unplug the cable to the scanner and reconnect. But that's it. I've not had any problems since

Not to sound rude, but are you inserting it with the arrows pointing into the scanner?  That is the first step. Afterwards makesure you have the scanner on and the green light is not blinking.
