Question about Philips Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have a philips 22ah786/44 stereo receiver. The out-puts are for bare wire ends, a red wire & black wire for EACH speaker. When I hook up a speaker it works ok. I want to go out to my laptop computer and use RCA jacks, one for left and one for right. The cable is plugged into a USB adapter from Roxio (Roxio Creator Special Edition 2011). I am wanting to copy my records onto CD's. So, I simply cut off the red RCA and white RCA at the other end, and put the bare wires into the "L & R" lugs but I am not getting the sound coming across. I may not have the right switch thrown, or there needs to be a black wire attached to the back of the receiver also??? Second question: How can I get a User Manual? PDF perhaps. This equipment is from my parents who bought it new. Thank you, Dwayne dwdewhitt@wamail.net

Thank you for the advice and resources.

The headphone jack is the biggger size.

There are no other out-put ports on this receiver. Can you tell me why the speaker outputs wont work? I am always interested in learning.

    Many thanks.

There is no free manual available for this model receiver, about the only thing I can find is a service manual, which is $10 here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Philips-Service-Manual-Stereo-Receiver-22AH786-44-/380188610065?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588501ce11&x=62&y=9

However there is a simple way to accomplish what you are trying to do. You can't just hook up RCA's directly to the speaker outputs, they do not function the same way speaker wires do. You CAN hook up the headphone output plug to a minijack to RCA cable though and use that.

Here is the cable you need, I think that receiver has a standard minijack headphone plug in, but you may need the minijack to large headphone adapter, which is the second link here. This is the cable:

Here is the adapter for 1/8 to 1/4 inch headphone adapter:

There should be a headphone port, possibly even on the front of the receiver.

Basically they speaker outputs will not work with RCAs because they are a different "format". The speaker outputs send a sinusoid wavelength out of them... pulses of electricity that a speaker picks up and then vibrates according to, thus producing sound. RCAs are looking for a more digital style signal, basically more like a computer signal to talk to them more than just vibrations...

It's hard to explain but just trust that they are very different styles of signals.

    Thanks,
    Tim

Please send me a diagram of how the wiring is to be set up on the back of the speakers

The red connector on the speaker should be connected to the Pos.(+) connection on the Receiver/Amp. The Black to the Neg. (-) connection. ( for the proper speaker) Front Left, Front Right, etc. All, or most paired wire has either a black stripe, different shape on one,or different colour wire(silver/copper) So if you hook up the Blk striped or silver to the Neg.(black terminal) on the speaker, do so at the other end (receiver ) If both speakers aren't hooked up the same, they will work, but there won't be as much Bass because the speakers will be out of phase.(when one speaker cone is moving out,the other will be moving inward.

Gauge cluster lights won;t light - replaced cluster, dimmer switch - did put new stereo in car? Fuses, bulbs all good. What could be the problem?

When you put the stereo in, what did you do with the red wire with a green stripe? The aftermarket radios don't always use these, so you have to wrap the ends, depending on whether or not you used a wiring harness. If that wire is shorted on the chassis, it will blow the dimmer fuse.

How do I hook up the bare wires speakers to the back, sound is coming out not good.

Sounds to me like you might have the polarity reversed. Meaning you might have hooked the positive to negative and the negative to the positive. Positive will will be red negative will be black on your receiver. On the speaker wires negative will always be solid black. Positive could be solid red, black with a red stripe, or black with any color stripe. Make sure you have solid black hooked to black and the other hooked to red. Hope this helps:)

I don't know how to attach my speakers to the red

If you have bare ended wires , you simply unscrew the red and black plugs at the amp they should have a hole in the end of the plug and on the side also just place the red wire into the side hole of the red plug and finger tighten the red screw the same on the black plug

Stereo Wiring 1984 VW Rabbit

The red wire is power, brown is ground. There also may be a second power wire (possibly yellow) that is switched though the ignition (test this with a light), if you hook it up that way you won't drain your battery by accidentally leaving the stereo on!! The best way to determine what wires go to what speakers is to take each pair and brush the ends across the ends of a "D" cell battery! the corresponding speaker will produce a bit of static! The wires with the stripes are the negative side of each speaker circuit. Hope this helps...;-)

Adding extra wire to speakers so I can move speakers.

Red and black are high end and blue and grey are sub speakers.

The end holes are designed for plug-in speaker jacks, either single-ended or double ended to span the red black simultaneously (the spacing has to be right, though). Tighten the red/black parts first.

Otherwise you need to bare a little wire (not sure you either can or want to do that with Monster Cables); unscrew the black or red connectors sufficiently and wrap the bare wire around the base, being careful to avoid stray conductors reaching across to other terminals. If you look closely there might be a small hole drilled through the terminals, accessible from below. Ideally you would bare the wires, tin the ends with solder, stick them through those holes and tighten the plastic knobs.14-ga lamp cord would work fine, too, and it's cheap, cheap, cheap.

The 901's will absorb unlimited amounts of CLEAN audio power.
