Question about Jl Audio 500/1 Car Audio Amplifier

1 Answer

I have a jl500/1 amp that is about 8 or 9 years old. Bought it brand new and it has worked fine. My receiver just screwed up and my volume went to max for about 10 seconds. The amp shut down and now when it comes on, it has no sound. Could the amp be blown and still power on?

Yes the amp can be blown and not show protect. I do warranty work for JL Audio. Have you tested your subs to see if they are ok? If they are then something internally is stopping the amp from working. I repair amps very cheaply to help out fellow car audio enthusists. I am the cheapest in the US. If you have not figured this out yet and want it repair let me know. Send me a message.

Karen, this may be an easy fix. There are a couple of screws on top of the unit and about 8 or 9 around the back edge. First make sure the unit is unplugged. Remove these screws andyou can lift the cover off. On the left side you will see 2 glass fuses. Gently pry these out and you will see they are marked on the end caps with voltage and amperage ratings. Replacements are very affordable at Radio shack. Good luck! B-) wayne2ears@gmail.com

I won't make you feel any better, but time & mileage
won't always be the reason things act up

Some people break down driving off the dealers
lot, with a brand new vehicle

I once worked at a ford plant & have seen them stop
dead in the factory & being pushed off the dyno or stranded
on the highway on my way to work, while being driven 4
miles before going on a car carrier

At 6 to 8 or 9 years, has always seemed to be the point
where you get the longest run, of one or two issues a year

Check for Codes
Check your dash lights, they should go off if it starts
How old is the battery? Just because one went 8 years
then next may go only 2 and a half
Listen for the fuel pump when you turn the key on
9 Years was always when my starters quit
Fuel pump is my guess, check pressure at engine

12" woofer not working

I bought a 3rd B212D unit that powers on, has white noise, no music. I took the 8 screws off and discovered that the solder connection at the woofer had broken off. I surmise that either the unit was dropped or the speaker wire had gotten hot over the years. Since the amp had an open output from the break, the high output burned up as I heard a pop when I turned the volume up. . If your volume wasn't maxed out, you could check the wiring and make sure it is connected & save yourself some change!!!

My radio volume just stopped working but you can see the channels and change from different stations what is wrong with it

If you have volume but cannot control it, this is a common problem. The volume is optical so it may just have dust in it, but I have had zero luck cleaning them. The only solution I know is to replace the whole head unit.
If you have an HK factory stereo with no volume at all, and the four channels went out one at a time, the amp in the trunk has failed. Another common problem. The amp is on the driver side above the wheel well. You have to remove the driver side rear deck speaker to get the trunk lining off without tearing it. The screws that hold in the speaker are beneath the speaker grill in the rear deck. Good luck getting a 15-year-old speaker grill up without breaking the snaps. Slide a putty knive in from the sides to try to release them, but they will break anyway.
If the amp has failed, you can just bypass the amp but you will have no subs or tweeters. I did that while looking for a good deal on a junkyard amp. You can buy a new HK amp from BMW but they are prohibitively expensive. You could buy an alternate brand amp and add crossover circuits to power the subs and tweeters if you are really handy with electronics.

If you have an HK system in your BMW and you replace the head unit, use the antenna power wire from the new stereo as the 'on' signal for your HK amp in the trunk. Your FM may not work quite as well because the BMW head unit communicates with the antenna amplifier. Also, if you have a BMW CD changer in your trunk, no other head unit will communicate with that other than the original BMW head unit.
Other than the CD changer and the antenna amplifier, the wiring adapter that you can get from Crutchfield or from Amazon will make the stereo head unit replacement plug-and-play.
You may need a special five-sided wrench to get the old stereo out. You can buy that wrench on line if you can't force some other tool into those two cap screws that hold the stereo in.

Unit touchscreen works randomly after update

Updating the firmware may have replaced the calibration settings.
You've a menu from where you can run re-calibration again.
It will ask for 4 or 6 points to click, and that's it.
