Hi there, a couple of features come to mind that may be the cause of your problem.

Firstly, make sure that the saw is unplugged from the power supply.

  • The chain brake is active and wont allow sprocket movement and hence the chain. If necessary, pull the front guard (in front of the front handle) back until it clicks.
  • Electric saws generally have an additional motor-stop feature built into the trigger mechanism which is deactivated when the trigger is squeezed. So, in order to move the chain along the bar the trigger needs to be squeezed releasing the motor-stop. A tip - wear gloves when handling chains and move the chain towards the bar tip ie in the direction of the cutters - if the chain suddenly stops you wont remove several layers of skin in the process ! better still use a screwdriver against the back of one of the cutters and move it forwards - there should be some resistance and there should be no slack chain on the underside of the bar. Hope this helps.

Mark, thanks for your reply. This model has no chain brake, just a stationary 'hand guard' in front of the forward handle. Also, I did press the trigger while attempting to move the chain, without luck. I'm wondering if there is simply a direct connection from motor output to chain sprocket on this model, and no movement of the chain is possible (without power, of course).

Glad to help but sorry I can't be of more assistance in this matter as I'm not familiar with this model. I'm surprised it has no chain brake though - I'm sure it's a mandatory requirement on new saws these days.

I borrowed a friend's POULAN 14" ELECTRIC

Remove the side cover nuts and the cover, wind the bar adjuster screw fully back, it may be in the cover, or on the front of the saw, push the guide bar fully back toward the sprocket, loop the chain ocer the sprocket and lay it around the the guide bar, make sure the cutters on the top of the bar rail are facing away from the saw, this will make sure it is the correct way round make sure the bar adjuster pawl is engaged into the hole in the bar, if the adjuster pawl is in the cover, replace the cover making sure the pawl engages into the hole in the bar, refit the cover nur finger tight, adjust the adjuster screw so as the chain fits snug fully around the bar, loft the nose of the bar and fully tighten the cover nut, with a gloved hand pull the chain manualy around the bar to make sure it is fitting in the rails and the sprocket correctly.

Woodshark poulan 14" slack chain

make sure the little tooth on the end of the adjuster for the chain is locked into the groove its supposed to go into and tighten it down.
Note: the chain is supposed to get loose on you but not as quickly as it is. maybe after an hour or so of cutting.
and as for it not cutting well, the chain may need sharpened.
if it has been sharpened once by someone than take it to someone esle if it is not satisfactory.
