This could be caused by several things. . After back flushing, did you rinse? Turned pump off, moved selector to rinse, and allowed to run until clear water was observed in the sight glass? If you continue to see the plume of particles, and it never stops, then you probably do have a problem. Your multiport valve gasket could be leaking by. Be sure you keep handle down when moving valve, and the gasket will last longer. You may have a broken, lateral (little fingers at bottom of the filter return piping. This would usually allow sand to flush out of the filter and it would be all the time. The "O" ring where the multiport valve seals to the down pipe could be leaking, letting the dirty incoming water mix with clean outgoing. Have you "cleaned" your filter lately? This is where you add a chemical to flush materials from top of sand pack? You can download a manual with troubleshooting instructions from Enter your exact model number

What will happen if the stand pipe o-ring is bad?

The Hayward Pro Series Sand Filter uses an O-Ring on the stand pipe to separate water returning to the pool, after being filtered, from water coming into the filter from the pool. If this O-Ring is broken, missing or sufficiently worn, small particles of dirt and sand can by-pass the sand filter and return to the pool without being properly filtered by the sand filter.

This can be especially evident just after backwash and rinsing of the sand filter bed. During this time water flows up through the sand bed, opposite the direction in normal operation. This forces the top-most material of the sand bed to dislodge and wash out of the filter to waste. It can also force fine particles to enter through a faulty O-Ring into the pool return stand pipe. Then, when returning the filter system to normal operating mode, those fine particles enter the pool through the water return piping and collect on the bottom of the pool -- mostly small sand particles but potentially filtered debris particles that were captured on top of the sand bed.

To avoid this problem it's wise to replace this O-Ring every few years. And make sure to follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the amount of sand to fill when replacing sand. It's important to keep the top of the sand bed at the correct level to insure proper filtering and minimize stray particles coming back into the return water.

Have a sandman filter and having problems with dirt piles in pool. I brush and sweep vacum nothing is helping. Pump runs good water is clear as a bell. Please tell me what I can do to get rid of these...

Sounds to me that if the piles are right off of the return that one or more of the filter laterals has failed and needs to be replaced. Another possible problem is that its time to change the sand in it especially if it is 4 to 5 years old. At that age the contamiiate level is very high increasing volume in the filter.

While vacuming loses suction, sand filter pressure goes high

That increase is due to the filter loading up with debris. Is the pool unusually dirty? If there is a lot of dirt and silt in the pool use the "waste" setting on your backwash valve while vacuuming.
This allows the water to bypass the filter and go directly out the waste line. Keep an eye on your water level because you will be removing water from the pool and may have to add more.

I have had my pool up since April, and it has been working fine. On Sunday, I vaccumed pool, and when I turned pump back on, it threw dirty water into pool, and now it throws sand into pool. We took out...

Is there an air ejection tube in your filter? My guess is you do and the little tube is not sticking up onto the top, rather, the little tube is in the sand and it is vacuming the sand into the return water flow due to the "venturi effect".

Check it out and let me know what you find.

Thanks for your question @

When I was filtering the pool the sand from the sand filter is blowing sand into the pool

That means that you have a cracked lateral in your pool filter. You will need to replace the lateral, which should stop the sand from entering your pool through the return line.

I have an Hayward Pro Series S244T filter and I have had problems with sand blowing back into pool - the filter is only 2 years old

When sand returns to the pool, there is a hole in either the media or the sieve that is supposed to keep the sand in the filter.
All of the sand must come out of the filter, the sieve at the bottom (outlet of the filter) must be removed and any broken segments must be replaced.
The sand is then returned.

Appears that the silicone sand is being thrown back into the pool from the return jets? I assume something gave out since the filter is old. What part is needed to replace on the EC65 DE Filter?

Is this a DE filter or a sand filter: Check all internal parts of your DE filter for holes or breaks. There is a hose inside that is suppose to eliminate air locks ... it may be submerged. Same applies to sand ... find the broken lateral or air lock preventing hose.

If you have a DE filter and sand is coming into the pool ... there is definitely a hole returning sand that bathers introduced into the pool ...

You are using DE in your DE filter, right??? not sand ... right???

What setting should I have my Hayward Sand Filter system on when I am vacumming out my pool?

Your pool filter should be set on "filter" for normal vacuuming. If you have a heavy debris load or an extremely dirty pool, you might want to vacuum with the "waste" setting, if your filter has one.

First, make sure that you are on the "filter" setting. If you have large debris or an extremely dirty pool, you might want to try the "waste" setting. Also, make sure that your pool filter has been backwashed. You might also want to consider changing your sand if it is only. It could have lost some of its effectiveness. Let me know if you try this and are still having problems.
