Hello carpenter552:

Check for the Belt being Off 1 of the Pulleys.
>>From your Description it Sounds like the Belt is Caught and Screaming and Not the Transaxle.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt and Enter the Model Numbers STX46 and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. *You can Drag the View Windows for Better Viewing.* Select the Power Train File.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Hello there:
I would first check to see if there is any binding in the deck belt's or gears and make sure that the deck is not set to low that you are cutting dirt instead of grass also make sure that all of the rods and opins are secure and are not bent ok?
best regards mike

Blades won't engage on John Deere x540.

I would remove the PTO switch and have a Deere dealer test it. Also on the 500 series the PTO operates through the ignition control module which is under the dash, you can see it when you raise the hood. It is black and about 2" wide x 3" long and 1" thick.

My mowers cuts uneven I replaced the blades but it still cuts uneven how can I level it?

Park mower on a level flat surface ( a concrete garage floor is ideal ) lift deck up until you can put a piece of a 2x4 flat underneath the deck and lower deck until it just contacts the 2x4. loosen adjustment nuts or turnbuckles and adjust until the deck just starts to clear the 2x4. this should level your deck. Now , lift the deck and remove the 2x4. put blade height lever on a known cut length and with a tape measure, measure the tips of the blades from the floor to the blade tip...they should all be the same within 1/8 of an inch...if not then you either have a bent blade, bent spindle shaft, or spindle bolts are loose or misaligned. Your deck could be warped too...depending on how hard a lick it took...good luck !!! ;-D
