Actually it is registered with Magellan, we are an independent help site here.. just wanted to make sure you were clear there.

It sounds like the firmware was corrupted on your device when the recent update was loaded, it is more common than the GPS companies like to admit.. any time you load a new update there is a chance it will corrupt the whole device which is what has happened in your case.

You will want to contact Magellan to get them to replace the unit, free of charge of course since you have the extended warranty. Call them at 800 707 9971, however they are only open Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST/PDT

Thanks, let me know if you have any questions or concerns, just reply to my answer here and I will be right back with you.

I am trying to be helpful, your software has been corrupted. There is no simple fix for this and it happens all the time.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer more to your liking, but you can get the device working again.. it just needs the assistance of Magellan as part of the process.

    Thanks

I updated software on my Magellan roadmate 1424 and after I had installed the updates the unit appered to get hungup and would not open operating system. I formatted it and ran the back up program...

The software of the unit got wiped out when you formatted the roadmate. The reason your system gets hungup was because it is not able to carr the updates you downloaded on it. Therefore, the solution was for you to have reset the device.

Now what you will have to do is to get some help from magellan, because they are the only source you can get the operating system from. Try to contact them from their help desk of:
Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST/PDT Telephone: 800 707 9971

They would provide you with the operating system for your unit.

My magellan 1424 showes a pic of a cpu with a usb cabel and a pic of the gps and that all it showes it does nothing else

The pictures that displays on your screen is a message asking you to get your system connected to a computer, then you either update the software, download a new software for it or you update your current software.
Try to reset your gps first before you connect it to a computer. To reset your gps device, you need to hold the power off/on button for about 15 seconds, then it will restart itself, then it will load normally. If it does the same thing, then you need to connect it to a computer and download a new software for your device.
I hope this information was helpful.

My magellan roadmate 1424 won't turn on. i've tried charging the battery and the reset switch to no avail. Anyone know another way to reset?

I don't think the problem is with your reset, i think the problem is with your battery, as in it's dead. Most of these units whether Garmin, Tom Tom or whomever all need to have the battery working to some degree. They do not like to use the 12 volt system as power they prefer to use the battery as a form of ups power setting, since the electronics in these things are so light and testy, the battery makes for a ups system, If the battery is bad and will not take a charge then the unit will not turn on and if it does it will turn right off again as soon as it finishes it self check.Hope this helps.

Updated roadmate 1470 gps without having a fully charged battery. Not gettin a menu now?

if the computer will see your 1470, just run the update again...if that fails, Magellan will repair or replace any of the gps that were rendered inoperable due to one of their updates.

Roadmate 700 will not find a sat. to lock on. It's in a good location and worked before. What is the small battery inside it for? Also I have had it for about 3 years and have never done any on0line...

updates are not your problem. If the screen lights up etc that is what this small battery does as well as retaining memory.
Check the main battery and ensure its fully charged. Other than that the SIIRF chip is damaged.. expensive repair

I just got a Magellan roadmate 1200 over the weekend from a friend and when I plug it in it loads to a screen that says the usb is connected follow pc instructions

The USB must be for charging the unit and downloading updates when it becomes available. You have to unplug the USB and use the battery power to put in addresses .My 1200 does the same.
