If it is a wide connector that goes in to the hard drive it is called IDE and if it is narrow it is SATA connection. On the following picture left one is IDE and right one is SATA. Hope this helps.

What type of hardrive do i need for my packard bell istart 2369 desktop computer?

For one, I abhor Packard Bell, and the lack of support for it's users, of older computers.

If you don't support your computers, I say do not buy one from them.
(Oh, excuse me. For $$$$$$ they will)

Can't even find the specifications on the internet, (I do not own one), and Peckard Bell Support is of no help.

So let's do it another way.

What kind of cables connect to the Harddrive?

This will tell us if it is an IDE unit, or a SATA unit.

An IDE, (Also known as PATA), harddrive uses a flat ribbon cable, for it's data cable,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATA

Click on the photo all the way to the upper right. Shows a blue connector on a grayish flat cable.

The power cable for an IDE (PATA) harddrive, is a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable. Shown here,

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#peripheral

Note the harddrive shown in the photos, is an IDE harddrive.

If it is a SATA unit, it will use a SATA power cable.
Has 15 contact pins in the connector.

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#sata

The SATA power cable has an L connection on the inside, to match the L connection on the back of the harddrive.

Same with a SATA data cable, only it is shorter in width, and has 7 contact pins,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SATA_ports.jpg

Also look at the label of the harddrive, and state what you see.
Is it a Seagate harddrive? What is the size? 250GB?

Smaller? Larger?

Once we find this info out, I can recommend harddrives.

Be aware that the Windows operating system was on that harddrive.
If you install a new harddrive, it won't have Windows on it.

You will need to obtain a genuine copy of Windows, and install it.

I have plugged my lap top power into 'my book' and yes I have cooked a component on the PSB card, is the car repairable or can it be replaced?

It would be better to remove the harddrive inside the WD My Book, and install it into an economical external enclosure.
Suggest you forget trying to repair the interface circuit board inside.

If I am all wrong, and have misread your problem, please state in a Comment.

If I am correct so far, and if memory serves, the harddrive inside is a SATA model.
I don't know however if it is a laptop sized harddrive, or a desktop sized harddrive.

A laptop sized harddrive is 2-1/2 inches across in width. (2.5 inches)
A desktop harddrive is 3-1/2 inches across in width. (3.5 inches)

Once you open the case you will know.

By using an economical external enclosure you will have a external harddrive again.

This is one example of an economical 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2783

This is one example of an economical 3.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2145406&CatId=2780

This is information that may help in opening the WD's case, and extracting the harddrive,

WD 500G HDD suddenly un-readable; changed name to local disk, says I need to format in order to use it. I have tons of important stuff on there.

Could you confirm if the problem with the drive not being recognized is a problem with the USB cable? I have a 250GB passport and it worked fine with my XP. Once I decided to reformat it to NTFS and tried to do so by plugging into my new windows7 laptop the problems started.

Wont recognize the primary master IDE. Do I need to replace the MB or is this a known problem. Have tried diff drives and cables...

Don't wish to down a motherboard manufacturer, as it isn't good business, but I would use a SOYO mobo for a frisbee.

You've indicated that the primary master IDE isn't recognized?
Is this by looking in BIOS Setup?

Have you tried to set the harddrive's parameters manually in BIOS Setup?
Set the Cylinders, Heads, and Sectors?

The Cyl, Heads, and Sec information for each harddrive can be found by looking at the label on the top of the harddrive.
If it isn't listed go to the harddrive manufacturer's website, and use the model number off of the harddrive, to find said information.

Example using Seagate harddrive,
Barracuda, Model number ST3500830A
500GB.

A) 16,383 Cylinders
B) 6 Heads
C) 63 Sectors

Also depends on what flat ribbon IDE cable you're using.
With a 40-wire flat ribbon IDE cable the primary harddrive plugs into the Middle of the cable.
With an 80-wire flat ribbon IDE cable, the primary harddrive plugs into the End connector of the cable.
(Both styles of IDE cables have 40-pins. Actually 39 as 1 is not used)

http://www.mikeshardware.com/howtos/howto_connect_ide_hd.html

(Look under the heading - Connecting Your Hard Drives)

Plus you may want to check the continuity of each flat ribbon IDE cable's wires.
Use a multimeter set to Ohms.
Due to the age of these cables they can go bad.

1. Try to use a different USB Cable and test. 2. Open the external harddrive and replace the disk with a spare one or working one. Then test if it connects. a. If it does not connect then the problem is the electronic board of the external harddrive. Buy a Harddrive enclosure so as you could still use and retrieve your valuable data. Or slave the drive on your desktop computer and see if its connect. b. If it connects then you have a faulty harddrive. I hope you have a backup of what you have there.

Hi, I have destop[ dell pentium R 4 cpu 3 GHz 1.99 GB of ram and 40 GB rom . I want to now if can change the hard disk and put another of 160 GB. tanks you carlos.

A) If you have the Restoration Disk (CD), or a full installation disk of the Windows operating system, the answer is yes.

B) If you have an image backup program, such as Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, or DriveImage XML, for example, the answer is yes.

The Windows operating system is copied over to the new harddrive.

It would be easier, and more cost effective to just install the 160GB harddrive as a Slave drive.

I don't know if your harddrive is an IDE (PATA) unit, or a SATA unit.

Here is more information on installing either an IDE harddrive, or a SATA harddrive, as a Slave drive in a desktop computer,

1) IDE {PATA} harddrive:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4inX3nC6M1E

1A) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMTOgt3UiB4

2) SATA harddrive:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCgFYNLzn18&NR=1

IDE, also known as PATA is the older style of technology.
SATA is the newer style.

(Parallel ATA
Serial ATA )

The beauty of SATA is not only the faster speed, but if you connect a SATA cable (Data cable) to ANY SATA connector on the motherboard, BIOS will find the device.

BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) will find the harddrive with the operating system on it, first.
Then it will recognize that you have a second SATA harddrive also.

(BIOS looks at both SATA harddrives.
When it finds the one with the operating system on it, BIOS will disregard the other SATA harddrive)

I need to locate a mother board for a firelite model #USBFLB40-C any suggestion? Or where can I get a new USB power data plug soldered on the old board? Thank you.

Yes I would take the Harddrive out of the SmartDisk FireLite external harddrive, and install it into an economical external enclosure.

Looking up reviews just now I know that it's a laptop sized harddrive that's inside.
(The Harddrive inside is 2.5 inches across in width. 2-1/2 inches)

I don't know however if it is an IDE or SATA unit.
But you will know once you get the case open, and view the Harddrive inside.

One example of a 2.5 IDE external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1086960&CatId=2782

One example of a 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2783

One example of an external enclosure that will support IDE or SATA harddrives that are 2.5,

Hi . I have trouble with Dell optiplex GX280 . In the PATA I have two devices . DVD and HD . Both set with jumper . DVD as Slave and HDD as Master ....But the install os cannot detect HDD . where is...

I don't know where the trouble is without more information.
Some tips/information I will list, however,

1) The master harddrive that came with the computer, and has the operating system on it, is a SATA unit.

Therefore any harddrive installed along with it has to be installed as a Slave drive.

BIOS will look for the harddrive with the operating system on it. This harddrive has to be set as a Master drive. (Primary Drive in BIOS)

Installing a harddrive that is a PATA (IDE) unit, AND a PATA optical drive on the same flat ribbon cable, has to be done accordingly;

A) It depends on what flat ribbon cable you have.
There is a 40 wire cable with a 40 pin connector. (39 actually. One socket hole is not used)

There is an 80 wire cable with a 40 pin connector. (39 actually)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ATA_cables.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATA#IDE_and_ATA-1

Proper method of connecting,

http://www.mikeshardware.com/howtos/howto_connect_ide_hd.html

2) Proper method of using jumpers on an IDE (PATA) harddrive, and connecting the flat ribbon cable,

Hard Disks Not Detected

Hi Alec, Chances are if hard drives are getting sufficient power (spinning hard drives are only a rough indicator) then there?s something wrong with the data lines that run from the hard drives to the controller. Check each connector on the hard drive to make sure it is plugged in securely, trace it to where it plugs into the motherboard and check them as well. They could have pulled out while you were moving things around. If that doesn?t work then I would try replacing the original video card. Let us know if this solved your issue and please don?t forget to rate the posting when we?re done.
