Question about Sharp R-9H84B Microwave Oven

1 Answer

The lamp in my R-9H84B Sharp microwave has burned out--or at least there is no light in the cavity when I turn it on. I can't find anything in the manual about how to replace it. Do you know if it is replaceable . . . and, if so, the model number of the lamp, and how to replace it? Gary

Thanks for taking the time to answer this question.

It sounds like you've done this before . . . and that's the kind of expertise I was looking for. The oven is positioned such that I can only easily see the front of it and a little bit of the left side (left when facing the front door). So I wanted to be 99% certain of the solution before I pull it out of its mounting and disassemble it. We use that thing every day!

    I will accept your answer.

You can order the lamp from Sears here.

Replacing the burned out lamp is fairly straight forward. Since I don't want you to kill yourself, please unplug the oven before doing anything else. Remove the four black screws from the sides of the oven (two per side) and the seven screws on the back unit holding the cover on. These back screws are easy to find as they are the ones at the edges of the back, two per side and three across the top.

Now, standing behind the oven, slide the cover back a couple of inches so the cover taps clear the frame. Then, grab the bottom edges of the cover on both side, gently pull them away from the oven frame and lift to top off. As soon as you have the cover off, the lamp will be obvious - right on top, toward the front.

While you are replacing the lamp, you may want to clean the glass - I do that whenever I have the cover off because that window tends to get dirty over time and interior cleaning. The screw to remove the frame holding the glass is inside the oven, on the top, front right of the oven. Use non abrasive scrubbers and cleaning solution because you don't want the glass to crack on you in the future. You might also want to vacuum out any dusty bunnies that you find.

Assembly is pretty much the reverse except that you want to put the side screws in first. You want to do this first because you must make sure you have the cover tabs correctly slid into the frame or the front edge will not be correctly pulled into the front trim. I found that pushing the sides in while sliding the cover forward does the trick. After you have all the screws back in, plug the oven in, pop open the door and the light should come right on.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the metal of the cavity is chipped or charred, you need to clean it, sand it shiny, then clean it squeaky clean again.

Then you can get high temperature appliance paint in spray or brush-on form from local appliance part stores or places like Wal-Mart and Lowe's.

I would suggest you let it dry overnight with the door open before using the oven.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

Replacement of the lamp should be carried out by a qualified appliance repair service.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT!

Attempt this only if you are competent.

But here is a basic method if you are mechanically minded and have electrical safety knowledge.

The lamp is sat in a housing and its position is adjacent to the vent holes that it shines through.
If you feel confident, disconnect it from the mains power, remove anything in the cavity.
Remove the microwave cover. Purchasing a new replacement lamp will be useful as it will give you an idea of what it looks like. Locate the dead lamp remove the lamp and fit the new one. Replace the covers. Plug it back in and try the lamp by opening the door.
Hope this helps.

Need instructions for replacing light bulb in Sharp Microwave Oven Model R430EK

When you have the new lamp to hand, so you know what you are looking for, remove from the mains supply and remove the case. The lamp is generaly near the vent or transparent poit in the cavity, that used to let the light shine through.
Remove the old lamp and fit the new one, taking care not to leave any wire ends free.

Sharp R-9H84B Microwave Oven was working normally

There should be an oven thermal cutout (part # RTHM-A048WRE0) on top of the oven chassis / cooking cavity. It will be on the left side top.

Also, there is a 150 degrees C magnetron temperature fuse (part # QFS-TA013WRE0) mounted on the side of the magnetron.

Lastly, there is a line fuse, probably located on the door switch mount between the switches.

All of these should read "closed" or virtually zero ohms.

The fuse and magnetron temperature fuse may be available at local appliance parts stores, but you can order parts from Encompass here or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

The part numbers above end in zero, not "oh".

Let me know if you need more help. Otherwise...
